AE86 Transmission rebuild
Hey guys, I'm back with another question. I'm in need of a transmission rebuild or replacement, 2nd gear is acting up, some problem with the sycros, and I need it fixed . I'm a first time manual driver so I don't want a 2nd gear holding me down with my beginner skills. I live in SoCal and I'm looking for a shop that will rebuild my old T50 without ripping me off (my dad checked out a shop in San Diego and they said it would cost $1000 ) or another T50 to replace the current one (I'm thinking about a good condition sr5 tranny and swap bellhousings with my gts tranny). So, it'd be great if you guys can recommend a shop or sell me a T50. Thanks in advance guys

Guys, I could really use some help, not to be pushy, but I need to decide something by the end of this week.

Since you in SoCal, I would call Cabe toyota in long beach and ask Herb(parts department) if he has any recommendations. I've only had my eight six for a couple months and he's been infinitely helpful sourcing parts, and helping me with any questions I've had while finishing up this part of my project, hope that helps.

Hello IndiaDorifto7,
I'll be posting some of my findings regarding T50 synchros tonight (as soon as I return from work)... I've just found an alternative replacement from other brands, you can save $100 easily just on a complete t50 synchro kit...

fair enough... how deep is your wallet??? How about a bolt in 6 speed option, that is STRONGER then the wimpy T50???
Cost = $3300 delivered to your door

What's the weight difference between the T50 and the J160 with the adapter? I would guess that the J160 with the adapter and 6 forward gears is going to be significantly heavier.

T50 weight is 30.5 kilos**.... so there is about an extra 10.1kilos (23#s + or -) it is centered in the car.... and truth be told it isn't going to effect the handling where its placed

Re: AE86 Transmission rebuild
$3300 is a bit expensive for me thanks for the offer though. I honestly just need to fix my 2nd gear synchro, nothing too fancy. I would like to try replacing the synchro DIY but, as you know, transmission work isn't cake. Most shops charge like $1000 for transmission work My next best option is buying a used t50 or, if possible, a w58 adaptor and a working w58 from the junkyard.
