T50 strength?

Postby redroku87 » Sun Apr 07, 2013 9:12 pm

This is going to sound stupid, but I have heard the generally held amount of power that a stock T50 can handle is around 200hp from either turbo or NA- with out going boom. Is this true?

My 86 has a freshly rebuilt tranny in it, just wanted to know what you all thought.

Right but my 86 is running full interior, its a sunday driver not a DD or a track car.

What is it that goes out on them?

They blow up from abuse, such as clutch kicking while drifting and from too much torque on a forced induction engine. They are not junk if you use them the way Toyota intended. Most are close to 30 years old with more than 200,000 miles on them, so you have to expect synchros to wear out during such a long life.

With a 200hp 160ftlb engine would that be enough to murder it fast?

Driven sensibly, maybe..its an old transmission which has done its time for many..gotta admit, with those available HP/torque numbers it's hard to resist.

I'm really liking the Leen J160..!

I'll let a tranny shop or the performance shop have their way with this thing hahah.

Are the MR2 (AW11) trannys just as bad?

quite fast........ as with everything there are caveats. BUT... if you run this engine hard... and push it through this gearbox... it isn't likely to last long.

With THAT much torque... AND running full interior(heavier car) you can either swap in the W5x gearbox, or you can swap in a LEEN J160 6 speed gearbox. In either of these, 160#/ft is child's play.

If you want to know more about the LEEN 6 speed... viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1064

honestly if the car is only be driven in weekends it should last..... know people that have mad turbo builds and never had a problem...... just have to behave yourself and take care of your tranny..... they feel awesome after a PROPER rebuild so make sure the shop you choose has a legit reputation. But if you wanna be completely confident about it and spend $$$$$ w58 or j160. Do the research

you don't have too... ;) With the shifter relocated, it fits neatly into the stock location

below it is installed in an Irish rhd AE86 powered by a 4AGZE

short and sweet... Currently there are 3 options: 1) a minimal kit[€1292] no shifter relocation, no trans mount, 2) complete kit[€1815], 3) fully assembled including a USED J160 transmission - BOLT-IN READ (and shipped to the USA) €3150 (as of April 10th 2013 - $4115.00)

Concerning US dollars.... it fluctuates based on currency exchange rates. The manufacturer is in Ireland, his home currency is Euros. Here is a currency converter http://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/

A BEAMS transmission is the donor(BEAMS 6 speed = J160). In this case you would order the complete kit for 1815 euros (plus freight), and then have a trans shop dismantle the transmission, take the tailhousing out to get machined, and then re-assemble the unit with the adapter on the front, and the modified tailhousing on the rear....

OR if that seems a bit much... buy the assembled unit and sell the J160 you have. Used J160 sell for about $600-$800... sometimes more.
