About to buy "ae86 gts" but has sr5 cluster. wtf?

i was about to buy an ae86, just saying..Legit gts, or conversion.
Things I checked for.
1. Vin on driver door = ae88...
2. Vin on dashboard = ae88
3. Vin on hood = ae88
4. Chassis code plate ae88
Yes it has disc brakes in the rear.
On the registration it's vin is ae88....

We talking about a 1984 corolla...hatchback.
But...But...again But.... Cluster has up to 110 mph. ( it had 270k miles)
It does have a 4age, everything looks complete. Non lsd.
Another fishy things..
Glove box and passenger door panel differnt colors, while the driver's doors panel is black.
It has a differnt switch to turn on the car...Literally it is just hanging...
Body is different colors LOL
And
Back seats are...well most of the interior is black
Both front seats are not from gts.
Has cruise control
I Did test drove it,
1. Gas pedal, stiff as hell, while clutch loose as hell.
2. Whining noise coming from the rear
3. Did not pull, it muffler was probably louder than what the car was actually going..


To my knowledge vins match up, but interior wise and cluster nope,

sO AM asking since most of y'll seem to be in around more than me.

GTS's were made 85-87. SR5 models were made 84-87. Yours could be a conversion or a GTS w/ missing parts and finished it up w/ SR5 parts, like the cluster. BTW some GTS's came w/o LSD.

if its an 84 its not a gts.

if gas pedal is stiff, probably because it has cruise, most corollas with cruise have really stiff gas pedal from my experiences.

doesnt sound like its an original GTS to me.

It sound like either the seller doesn't fully know what he has, or the VIN has been switched.

- maybe the seller is just assuming it's an '84 (maybe he's going by the build date on the door )...
- maybe the cluster was swapped out because the original wasn't functioning correctly...

The whole thing sounds fishy to me.

If the asking price is too good to pass up,then hell buy it! Its got potential, legit model or not..it needs a new home

if its an 1984 with an ae88 vin get the hell away from that car! do the vin plates seem new or have been messed with? If so i would report that car. That's illegal. Could be a stolen car.

it could be an 85 with a build date of 84. check the VIN with the local police dept, before buying anything that seems out of place or in anyway makes you uneasy.

^^Good advice..a similar incident a few years back,swapped work for a sr5/gts.. Ran the plates & vin turned out to have numerous traffic infractions & unpaid parking tickets..decided to part the whole car afterwards

The tenth digit in the VIN will be an "F" if the car is a 1985 model, "E" for a 1984, etc.

So JT2AE88C1F###### would be a typical real 1985 GT-S hatchback. (Excuse me, liftback.)

Changing the cluster changes the odometer, that's one good way to hide mileage on a car. If your state has annual inspections, they also have a record of the actual mileage from each one, and when the odometer was changed.
