CEL Issues
So recently had to do a brake master cylinder and while I was at it I put new valve covers on with new gaskets since I had a set which I shaved and polished. I also took this opportunity to do spark plugs and check my timing which was off a few degrees. Now the cel is on for code 6, rpm signal, the car drives fine if maybe a little more sluggish on the bottom end and the light turns off in third gear after 5500 rpm. Did I break something in or around he distributer? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, even putting the time back to where it was didnt turn it off.

It could just be a loose connection at the plug, run the engine and 'wiggle' the distributor plug wires whilst having someone check the CEL
If the light goes off it is just a loose wire somewhere. Do not grab the high tension wires (thick ones going to the plugs)

I think my timing could still just be a little off since the light seems to go off around peak power where the timing is most advanced.

I'm not sure to whom that was directed, but it didn't seem to help.
Have you gone about the recommended diagnostic steps per the repair manual? Checking your connections, power/voltage, grounds, etc.
If you don't have access to the manual I have the basics. This board won't let me upload many attachments due to a supposed limit. Hope it helps.
1. Check there is no voltage between ECU terminals IGt and E1. (idling)
2. Check there is voltage between ECU terminal IGt and body ground. (idling)
OK? Check wiring between terminal E1 and body ground.
Bad? Repair or replace.
3. From check #2: Refer to +B - E1
Bad? Replace.
Ok? Check wiring between ECU and distributor.
Ok? Check distributor.
Ok? Check wiring between ECU & igniter.
Ok? Check igniter.
Ok? Try another ecu.
Refer to +B - E1. ---> Ok? Check wiring between ECU and distributor

Thanks pirate for the insightful response, that's what I was looking for ended up finding the diagrams I needed on Hachiroku.net, the problem has been resolved. Surprisingly not from just shaking wires around.

Redid the timing again to be sure it was at 10* in diagnostic mode and 16* out of diagnostic, disconnected all associated plugs and cleaned with some crc electrical cleaner, left battery disconnected overnight CEL was gone in the morning.
