t3 intermediate shaft has play with mr2 manual rack
t3 intermediate shaft has play with mr2 manual rack
So I just installed a mr2 manual rack, and I used the t3 intermediate shaft but now there is play between the column and the intermediate shaft. To get the old shaft out I put a prybar on the old ujoint and hammered the shaft out. but the t3 shaft slid right in and you can feel the play. so now there is a small dead zone where turning the wheel will do nothing. Has anyone else had this problem? if so did you fix it?

On which end is there play? The u joint side/end or where it actually slides into the column?

The end that slides in. I'm thinking I could wrap it in something or use liquid urethane. But unless something is messed up I can't imagine no one else's has play.

Re: t3 intermediate shaft has play with mr2 manual rack
Somebody else posted this problem a while back but I couldn't find it in a search. IIRC it was something about the T3 shaft not having the little rubber pads like the stock shaft which close up the gap (I could be wrong).
Anyway, the person who posted the issue last time just welded the shaft to the column. From a safety standpoint doing this isn't advisable!

JB Weld is your friend. Just loosen the bolt on the u-joint and you'll have enough play to get it in there.
