Postby ian.stewart » Sat Oct 04, 2014 1:56 am

What are the best plugs for a reasonably stock 4 age, running 40 DHLA dellortos, my normal choice would be NGKs but everywhere I look I see conflicting info...

I can't think of any convincing reason why carbs would require a
different plug to EFI. And NGK are as good, if not better, than most
of the other "latest and greatest" plugs hyped up by advertisers.

Personally, I use the basic plug series and change them regularly,
rather than the higher priced "long life" types with kryptonite tips.
There is no measurable real world performance advantage from the
higher priced plugs, and if you like to keep a couple of spare sets in
different heat ranges in your toolbox, basic plug is the way to go.

BIGPORT (TVIS) 4AGE engine = NGK BCPR5ES-11 or BCPR5EY-11
Plugs pre-gapped at 1.1mm (0.044")
SMALLPORT (non-TVIS) engine - NGK BKR6ES or BKR6E
Plugs pre-gapped at 0.8mm (0.032"

The second option is the "V-Power" version with grooved electrode.

Whatta ya got, put in the same thing (or an equivalent shorter/longer life plug), that is unless the current plug isn't suffering from old age and/or mechanical failure?
What do they look like, how old/miles/kilometers are they, and under what conditions were they used & what are there new if any conditions that the plugs&engine will be experiencing?
Platinum = Very long life & iridium also = Very long life + advertising.
Copper, multi-electrodes/ground straps/groove/grooves & most whatever is just advertising.

Also, they can be cleaned & filed & re-gapped when they're really bad, just to see the result.
