simple ae86 build up

Postby haymaker » Thu Jan 23, 2014 10:42 pm

this is my lil mule.
Image
Image
Image
it was alot of fun until this happened to the 260,000 4ag
cracked piston
Image

scored cam journals
Image

omg head gasket
Image

so instead of just getting a new 4ag or even perhaps a 4agze, i got all silly and bought
Image
sr20det blacktop

mounts:
Image
Image
Image
Image
cut the shifter hole and welded everything up
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

added a bomer bar to stiffen up the front
Image

stiched a few things
Image
painted the bay
Image
Image

new pump
Image
i am incapable of having a stock cam cover so i traded the blacktop cover for a redtop one (i guess the blacktop ones are cooler or something) and started grinding
Image

motor in for turbo kit mock up

water pump pulley back from coating
Image

my current mode of transport matches the heap
Image

time for the manifold
correct placement of turbo is key
Image

collector finished
Image

runner #1 is done
Image

lets take a break to look at my freshly powdercoated manifold
Image
wrinkly

ok back to manifold

all weldededededed up with the wastegate port

Image
manifold with turbo (gt28rs)
Image
and some pics with the wasgate on. i need to get some 1.5 tubing to make the external wastegate dumper
Image
Image
from underneath
Image

i cut out the core support, it was tough to do mentally. now there is no going back :P
Image

then i cut out some little end caps and aaron welded them on. this step isn't done, we are gonna put a back plate on as well because this is where we are gonna mount the intercooler.
raw
Image
welding
Image
Image
plate
Image
the only thing that sucks about this, is that i am going to need more painting done.

then i fabbed up a lil dump tube and welded a lil bit of it then handed it over to aaron to make sure it didn't end up looking like crap
Image
Image

3 inch downpipe
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

i also fabbed up a little heat shield for the master
Image

i got my stance oil filter relocation block. it's a nice piece, except for the hardware they provide, c'mon guys you could have put washers and lock washers in there. so i used my own hardware because once i added the washer and lock washer the hardware was too short
Image
Image
Image

haven't had alot of time to work on this lately. too much paying work, that's kind of a good thing tho.
got the lower radiator supports done tho.
time to start mocking up the intercooler so we can mate them together
Image
Image
Image

the reason i am not doing hardly any of the welding:
my tig welds:
Image
aarons tig welds:
Image

granted he's been doing it for ten years and i have never really done it at all, but i am starting to learn a bit more. i figure i might do some more of the welding that won't be seen on the car, like the bottom of my throttle cable bracket (pictured). i'll have him weld the top so it looks pretty.

bought a battery
odyssey 925, its bigger than the normal odyssey, but i may want to run a small stereo.
Image

finally got all my fuel line material from the baller of bolts
i like the silver/black.
Image
Image
somehow i forgot to take a pic of the fpr all finished, oh well.

the only internal improvements i made are a set of tomei rocker arm stoppers, they were very easy to install.
jdm yo

sealed up the top end with all ne gaskets, gromets and punk rock nuts

what is this pile of parts for?
Image

baby shoes!
Image

or... just intercooler end tanks.
here they are welded up being and test fitting for placement
Image
Image

the beginning of the cold side pipe
Image

welded on and mocked in place with an ugly blue silicone
Image

hot side pipe done
Image

time to figure out the bov, not much room with the short pipes but it fits snugly on the cold side
Image

here it is hiding underneath. the red is just for mock up, i'll be buying a black one.
Image

finally, some bracketry to hold the intercooler in place.
start with some home made bosses welded to the radiator core plates
Image
Image

here is the top sode of the bracket
Image

and how it looks from underneath.
Image

i like it because when you look at it from the front, it looks like the intercooler is not supported
here are some "done" pics. i still need to make all the shrouding for it tho.
Image
Image
Image

bought some recaros for my pleasure
Image

and because i can't stop myself from wasting money on stupid ****, i bought a personal steering wheel... it has GREEN stitching!
Image
Image
Image

and lastly started making some beauty plates to cover my butchered trans tunnel
Image
Image

this is the intake i will use to get the car started and driving, i plan on switching to a map based engine management system as quickly as possible, so i just needed a temporary intake that uses the maf.
the final intake will pretty much look the same tho.

here it is
Image

installed
Image
Image
Image

got crafty with some cardboard, cut out some simple shapes. then i bought an extremely expensive piece of aluminum and cut out the same shapes
Image

taped the shapes together in a pleasant way
Image

then aaron welded them up for me

Bad moon rising.
and now on to some fucking ****,

first off, i have been very unimpressed with all the s13 rearend swaps that i have seen, even if the fab was good, the execution or design has sucked (thanks for showing me that crap dubsky... you almost tainted my brain)
well,i took the car to john, because he's done a few swaps like this, and he understands the geometry of the suspension.
that beings said, the subframe needs to be up higher than the body of the car will allow. soooooooooooo
he cut some holes in the heap. these are just for clearance at this time, the finished holes will be wider for better bolt access and they will be boxed in as well.
Image

and now the fun pics...

well... this is what 30mm extra track per side looks like.
Image
Image

and now with my overfenders.
Image
Image
Image

well... after alot of nothing... somethings happened...
doing this well is a lot more involved than the way i have seen it done before.

Image
Image

sorry about the awful pics... i need to buy a new camera

my nice alloy driveshaft was delivered by a demon corgi while i was away on business.
Image
removed all the sound deadening from where the seat used to be and finally made the templates for the suspension hole covers.

before:
Image

after:
[Image

i was able to cut out and tack together the passenger side "minitub" for the suspension arms
Image
hows that for a horrible picture.

and then cheech and chong break into your car.

Image

but as bad as the duo that brought us classics such as "up in smoke" and the skit "dave's not here", they are in no way as bad as the fucking wizard that broke into the car

Image

but when all is said and done, there is nothing a sledge hammer and an unusually large punch can't fix

Image

overs were severely warped probably due to sitting on a shelf in te origin wharehouse in an bad position for many years. i can't imagine that they sell many coupe overs.

front fenders are pretty much on as well as the hood.
just need to make a bracket for the headlight bracket, yeah the bracket needs a bracket.
Image
Image
Image

also pulled the vent out of the old hood, not looking forward to doing all the measurements to fit it to the new hood
Image
Image

cool
Image

Image
Image
lotsa measuring
Image

but now its ready for surgery
Image

i also cut out the wavy part of the overfenders so dylan can make them fit correctly
Image

pretty happy that i got the hole in the right spot.
looks pretty good on the levin hood.
Image
Image
Image

i am gonna cut yet another hole above the turbocharger and install a mooneyes louver kit to help get some of the hot air out from beneath the bonnet.
Image

i am gonna get the 16" version, but my mock up is the 12 inch. it will basically run from the windshield squirter to the upper corner of the v-mount vent

bashbar!!!

because how else would i hold my bumper up... duhh

vitaly was happy to help
Image

brackets:
Image

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

can't even tell that it is on.
perfect.
Image
my quick-latch quick releases to the front aero.

i needed to weld a tab to the bash bar for the male piece to mount to.
Image

i haven't done too much mig work, so it was a little left handed.

Image
Image

then i mounted the bash bar back onto the levin and did a little measuring for where to mount the receiver bits to the fiberglass. i was actually surprised to find out that if you measure twice and cut once, it actually comes out right the first time.

Glad to see a thread back here, now I don't have to chase it down haha. Cars looking great, body panel fitment is awesome! Is the whole bottom side of the fenders cut and remade or trimmed and glassed back over? Keep it up!

Everything below the "moulding" line was removed and re-made. Right now the car is two faced because only the pass fender is modified. It's a ton of work, hopefully we'll start on the other side next week, because my grind that is the fiberglass guy is doing an paint job on a formula d car that only has a 6 day window to be completed, so he'll be busy

Absolutely beautiful. Totally dig the way you mounted the front bumper. I need to invest in a good welder.
