Re: Combo motor
I just finished doing basically this exact thing. I rebuilt the entire engine and ported the head, so I'm speaking from a "new" engine perspective. I wanted to keep TVIS for road driving to get a little extra lowend torque, but maintain the high rpm performance, so that's why I went this route. I'm really happy with the results. It does have about as good lowend torque as you can expect from a 1.6l engine and has good torque and power all across the rev range like it should.

Re: Combo motor
the redtop/small port head flows better and is an upgrade to the big port/bluetop head. Kinda going backwards here.

I would stick to the red large port head. the 2ng gen large port has a little bit different intake ports andmake a bit more power but over all its about the same.

Re: Combo motor
I have a red top bottom with a blue top head but that's how I got the car and I've never had an 86 so I have nothing to compare it to. All I know is the car is slow as **** compared to the b16 powered civics I've been playing with for years, but the balance of the 86 is amazing and the car is so much more fun to drive then front drive cars.

Re: Combo motor
going with the blue top head is easier
also i think it makes just about the same power
I like TVIS so I tend to stick with it

You're not really comparing apples to apples, though. Any front drive car will be faster in a straight line to a comparably powered FR rear drive car due to the more efficient drivetrain in FF configuration. If you have comparable whp, then you have a more accurate comparison. I'd just get a set of Tomei Poncams or equivelent and call it a day.

Re: Combo motor
color of the cam covers doesn't tell us anything.........
*IF*, when you say redtop you mean a smallport head/engine, then it requires some additional parts to make it work in rwd configuration... since it was only offered in fwd format.
A largeport head can make similar horsepower, the smallport head offers an advantage in higher port(charge) velocity. This higher velocity allows the engine to make torque earlier. This will only be a benefit *IF* your induction system is matched to the head.
