Megan 1.85 lowering springs?

Postby Slideways86 » Thu Jan 24, 2013 6:16 am

Megan lowering springs are they any good? money is tight and I'm dying to get my gts on the road. The last owner cut the trd springs and it rides terrible.

I'm in the middle of doing a shocks (KYB blacks) and springs (Megan 1.85) upgrade.

Once I get the on, I'll try to find this post and give a little feedback.

More than likely I'll post a little write up.

I was in the same situation as you. Owner had cut oem springs and blown tokico blues. I replaced it all, new tokico blues and megan lowering springs. It is a little bit stiffer and sits low enough for me.
For Reference, after everything broke in

Here's another example of uncut megan springs on tokico blues (195 tires):

what kind of cut TRD springs did you inherit on your car? when you say, "they ride terrible", it could very be that your shocks are blown. if they were cut TRD USA (aka Eibach pro-kit), then it is probably your shocks that you need to replace. not the springs! if they are cut TRD Racing springs, then its probably both you'll want to replace if you want a softer ride.

So...I finally got to installing the suspension on my corolla.

I went with Megan lowering springs (1.85) and KYB GR-2s.

I"ll try to post a pic some other time, but I want to say mine car looks like the silver one above. I want to say that my rears look a little lower though.

As for ride. I would say it is slightly better than what was on there before. Which was who knows how old OEM stuff. When I jerk the wheel the car still rolls more than I would like and when I hit the brakes the nose still dips some.

I would say the Megan setup is a good route to go if you're looking for a good cheap stock replacement. It doesn't lower the car too much, and gives you a "enhanced" OEM ride.

If you're looking for more "performance" I would go with a stiffer spring rate and or just save up for coil-overs.

Thanks for the reply man. I already bought the same setup as you but my car is in pieces right now. I'm going through the rear end installing a new flywheel and clutch and replacing almost all the seals. I'll post pics when she's Rollin.

from the pix, those cars don't look lowered at all. Can't even imagine a stock rolla sittin 1.85 inches higher than those.

back when i bought my first ae86, i really wanted to throw coilovers on it right away.
moto-p and others here urged me to just get springs and shocks, as coilovers would be overkill to start off with.

i listened and put B+G springs on the tokico blues that were already on the car. they were yucky progressive rate but it got the job done. it was still a decent setup for starting off. had enough roll so i could feel what the car is doing. still decent for daily driving. didnt throw off the suspension geometry much. nice entry level setup.
then i went with KYB AGX shocks (short stroke mod) on coilover sleeves up front and adjustable spring buckets out back. (circle track parts, believe it or not! built them myself) spring rates were approx 6/5kg.
that setup was great and car was a little lower but still not slammed. handled better with WAY less body roll. car was able to break traction easier. next step was geometry correction (traction brackets, etc.) but i sold the car and moved ot japan. (bought a 400hp s14 and went drifting at places like ebisu, fuji speedway)
fast forward to now and my second ae86 with powered by max coilovers. these are the holy grail you guys. amazing.

moral of story: upgrade the equipment as you progress as a driver. your setup should match your skill level. dont over-equip the car. the ae86 is very much an extension of you, and will very much feel this way if you upgrade in steps as i have.
tons of us here believe in a simple philosophy: the best money you can spend on your AE86 is TRACK TIME. ;)
now get out there and have fun!(safely)

I have Megans with KYB GR-2s on mine and the ride is great for me. Could be a little lower but its a great ride none the less. I want to upgrade to the coilovers eventualy.

hmmmm... perhaps its the different angle of the photos. Fronts still look almost the same, certainly not almost 2" lower.
Red coupe 'stock height' looks like a 4x4 in the rear. My AEs must've all "settled" :)

Interest in the thread because I'm gonna get & cut some M2s... like a few others have done. They probably didn't like the 'supposedly 1.85 inch drop" either. They claim 'decent/sporty' ride and definitely looks a lot better (ie. like its 'lowered').
Its all subjective, so we'll see.

I'm a little iffy on the 1.85" drop claim also. One can tell it's been lowered but it's definitely not low. I've even had random non enthusiasts ask when I'm going to lower the car (with megan springs on).

My current red coupe (pictured above) had over 240k miles at the time of that pic so I'm sure the original suspension had settled. The shocks were in good condition though.

Edit: I also forgot to mention the red car above has 185 falken performance all season tires while the black car has 195 falken rt615 which means it isn't an apples to apples comparison. Considering this the drop is probably less than advertised.
