I hate to say it....

Postby carbd7age » Mon Sep 23, 2013 4:15 pm

I hate to say it, but I have the stupid-est issue keeping my car in the shed now. I have the engine running pretty good, maybe some timing and jet fiddling needed, but it runs all right. Well I noticed I was leaking oil, but it's a fresh rebuild with all new gaskets n whatnot. Well I'm leaking oil from the valve cover studs. I don't have factory 4AGE valve cover nuts, I'm using leftover water pump nuts - which are open and not enclosed acorn.

So my question is: are OEM 4AGE valve cover nuts magic or can I just grab a bag of M6 acorn nuts and hammer down?

I'm pretty sure there are supposed to be rubber/metal grommets that go between the VC and the acorn nuts.

Oh yeah I have those all in place, all new. They just don't seal tight around the camshaft studs that stick out so oil comes up, like through the threads.

If the rubber bolt seals aren't damaged, use a little bit of gasket goo under them and tighten them up again. Works a treat.

Ah cheers mate, I didn't think to put a dab of sealant on the threads. I ordered some nuts off the eBay so I'll do that when they get here.

You should not need any sealant if you use the correct acorn nuts. The seal/washer
things have rubber top and bottom and are designed to work with the acorn nuts.
They only leak on the thread with open type hex nuts.
