Worthless rear strut bar for the coupe?

Postby miswuevos » Fri Jul 12, 2013 4:31 pm

Is this true? due to the fact that the coupe already has that section in the middle, therefore the rear strut bar wont help?

The coupe is more rigid because of that but no, it is not worthless. You will notice a difference in feel before and after. Tell your friend with the assumptions to make like a tree and get out. That answer makes about as much sense as a screen door on a battleship! Pffffff!

Depends on the so called strut bar!!
A single bar, not triangulated, or one that goes on the shock studs? First is almost next to useless, second is just plain F'd up stupid.

I would like to know more about this too, seems like the upper rear strut bar for the ae86 is a waste of money, anyone have more info and/or can post pics?
Most that I have seen are either bolted or welded directly onto the body, not on the shock studs. But it only seems about as effective as those ebay c-pillar bars.

How many different versions do they actually make of rear strut bars for coupes?

the hatch and coupe actually use the same bar but there is a hatch spacific bar iv seen. there is as bar that bolts to the top of the struts and there is one that you have to drill holes near the strut and there is a triangulated version of the one you have to drill.

Thank You
I didn't realize they were compatible. Very cool.

Would a welded one be more beneficial than a bolt-in one?
I had been thinking about making one out of DOM.

Just attaching a bar between the shock towers is not going to offer any huge benefit anyway, the shocks don't carry most of the suspension load and the sheet metal for the shock towers is pretty flimsy and only tacked into the shell. If they were seam welded and plated there would be more of a benefit.

there is also 4/6 point rear strut bars that can be used in the hatch or coupe. they tie in the strut area and the bumper supports

i vote the home brew strut assembly which integrally connects to many points along the side of the chassis then crosses over from the left to the right to the rear strut tower and the inner body along all corners . This assembly looks the most structurally sound design.. if it is structurally added as a section of the active chassis. those teenie little round 3x bars are mostly for looks.

The best bolt in rear bar available for these cars was the amt tri bar imo (hatch only unfortunately). It bolted to existing reinforced seat anchor mount points up top, and to the floor cross brace which required holes to be drilled. It really worked, but even it wasn't perfect because the upper mounts are stronger than the floor (even the raised cross brace inside the car). I removed the bar after having it a few months and noticed the metal on the floor cross brace where it was bolted to was a little warped.

Think about it. Most of these braces require holes to be drilled for all of their mounting points, and the metal is really thin and not reinforced. Seems like bling more than anything.

What problem are you trying to solve exactly? There is value in having a front strut tower brace, but I haven't noticed any problem with the rear that justifies bracing the shock (the rears are not struts) tower bracing. The bracng that is up high on the body is a joke and serves no handling purpose other than to further raise the center of gravity (not good.)

There was no problem, actually i wanted to see if i would notice a difference just like with the front upper strut bar, now it all makes sense to me. :)
