Nick's 1985 coupe build

Postby F1ashpoinT » Mon Apr 15, 2013 10:27 am

Picked up this trashbag last week :-)

My cars together

Got home and immediately started tearing it apart.
Picked up some supplies the next day and kept working on it.

-Rebuilt the carb
-Tore out the AC
-Looped the ps lines
-tore out the sub/amp wiring
-pulled the pinstriping off
-rewired the fan
-capped all of the vacuum lines that had screws in them
-deleted cruise control
-changed the oil
-flushed the coolant
-replaced shift knob
-installed spin turn knob
-re grounded the battery
-painted silver window trim black

All in the first 24 hours of ownership haha
Here's the trim being painted

Car prepped and ready for paint

Primed

Wetsanded the primer

I welded sheet metal over the punched out lock holes while I was prepping.

Painted

Car as of last night

Got this and put it on because the P.O. trashed the carb that was on it. All the throttle plate screws were broken off.

Ass end, before/after

One week of ownership

Car is running good now, I have alot of wiring to fix. Dash doesn't even light up lol. Might go get tags today, we'll see. Still need to weld the diff, order my wheels, replace broken wheel studs(already have new), get new fenders/hood. and rewire EVERYTHING

Two tone was done by the previous owner, and looked TERRIBLE close up. Alot of overspray, and hard paint lines

Not into that look at all

Pulled out all of the sound gunk

Installed a shift book I had laying around since it didn't have one

Fenders look like **** close up. Didn't spend much time on them or the hood because I'm just going to end up replacing them.
Rolled them flat before I painted

Bent the right side out enough that I can open and close the doors, It was pretty bad off before.

Hopefully will have the car completely back together tomorrow night

Nice man, looks great. Its nice to see another 3tc coupe :D
What did you use to remove the sound deadening material? It looks really clean.

Thanks dude, i just used a small drywall knife to take off the sound deadening, came right off. Wasn't worried about scratches because I'm going to paint the interior too.

Nice, I'm going to give that putty knife a try. I started peeling some of it up when I was fixing my floor.

You're lucky, scoring that GTS rear. I'm in the process of getting some material to build a jig to swap an 8.8 in mine.
A buddy let me borrow his GTS rear to make the jig and I scored an 8.8 for short money.

Figured out my starter had only one bolt holding it on...

Got the choke on the carb hooked up finally and threw a new drive gear on the starter.

Car wouldn't start when I put the starter on it. Thought it was a fuel problem.

Someone was nice enough to pour about a gallon of water into my tank when I parked it outside overnight...

Got all that sorted out today and got the car running again. Did some brake work.
Here was the studs on the front.

Replaced all the studs, new rotors, new pads, new inner and outer wheel bearings.
http://imageshack.us/a/img89/3210/photo33qh.jpg[/img
Same treatment for the rear, minus bearings.

picture one of my friends took when i was working haha
Image

Looks like I'll actually be able to drive it to work tomorrow

Was this the one on craigslist, I think in Pennsylvania? I remember a 2 tone coupe being on there with a 3TC before and saw you're in Maryland. If so nice score with it having a GTS rear!

Not to hijack this thread but you're just over 2 hours east of me it looks like. I have the only 86's I've seen for an hour in any direction for the past few years, save for the ones hiding in garages that I've yet to find haha.

Couldn't tell you what they are, sorry. :-(
Found them on craigslist listed as "vintage wheels 4x114.3". I don't even know the offset, I just know they're 14x7. Supposedly they're off of an S30 and apparently pretty rare.

Painted the hood

I replaced both inner and outer tie rods, can't wait to drive the car now. I also replaced my pinon seal... however that wasn't why the rear end was leaking. The P.O. had the pinon nut finger tight... New seal, new fluid, and torqued properly now. My new throwout bearing and slave cylinder should be in tomorrow. Then at least I can have the car moving under its own power again. Waiting on tires and a front bumper now, and the car will be done until I can afford coilovers. (or it breaks again)

Putting interior back together. I stripped the dash and painted all the red pieces wrinkle black. Turned out pretty good.

Interior, bucket seats should be in soon

Got a new bumper... it was broken. Took me about 6 hours but I got it back into shape.

Made it look cool

As soon as my tires get in I'll mount them and put them on the car. Looks hilarious with the wheels so sunken.

Nice dude! You should post some pics of your car.

Image

Bought a lateral rod, and spaced the wheels so they don't look like **** with the flares. All the milk over everything is just paint that I've wetsanded and haven't wiped up.

Image

engine bay as of last week, car now has the radiator and a bunch of other misc stuff in it, need to take a new pic. HAVENT SCRATCHED IT YET !

Image

Current pic of the Lex for good measure

Just waiting for the bellhousing to come in the mail. I have all the wiring harnesses minus the dash harness. I either have to pick one up from a GTS or get the connector and hardwire it. I'm picking up the rest of the aero for the car after christmas. I have 6 weeks off work so I have plenty of time to finish this up!

And I got the clutch/flywheel/transmission in place. Couldn't get a better pic while lifting it into place lol. The 4ag bell housing I bought was orange, and it took a while to get all the paint off. I also had to modify the throwout bearing guide to fit on the new bell housing.

Car is getting REALLY close. I think all I need to order is the fuel pump and find a dash wiring harness. I have everything else I need already on the way.
