Fueling problem?

Postby XII » Wed Feb 27, 2013 5:06 am

I have a weird problem on my hands, my car (GTS converted, external fuel pump, smallport, bigport ECU) never ran consistently since the engine was rebuilt. I mean I had to wind it out at least once after warming it up to get it to idle right and it always idles high otherwise. Anyway I took it to a local mountain to go up and down a few times and the second time I was coming down from the top it started to small of gas. This went away when I got down and back on the highway but then I had to replace the clutch master and when I was working on it I could smell gas again. Not from under the hood at all, just around the car. It had been running fine for a while after and I adjusted the spark timing. Then a few days later all of a sudden when I floored it getting on the highway one day it started smoking pretty badly off throttle, and later that day on my way back home it started acting weird, the gasoline smell came back and it started stuttering and not wanting to idle, but ran fine above 2000 or so.

Does anyone have experience with a similar problem?

"GTS converted,"
That pretty much says it all. There's a leak somewhere in the fuel system plumbing that you did, or in the charcoal cannister, purge valve, and return line. You did install all that stuff right?
I'd wash the entire underbody and engine bay with a steam genny if you can, then try to find that leak before something catches fire. Or, buy marshmallows and fire insurance. Gasoline smell = gasoline leak = not a good thing!

yep and if you are using wrong hoses the gas can melt the rubber and seep thru. eventually losing pressure.

the hesitation sounds like you dont have consistant pressure. so there for you must have a leak somewhere

what kind of pump and lines are you using? and connection fittings

Aside from whats been mentioned check fuel rail and injectors.
Sounds like a leak, drawing air in or loosing gas pressure, you dont want that point to completely give of course.
If you can have a mechanic diagnose it, easy for them to put on a lift find n tell you location for you to fix. GL!

"easy for them to put on a lift"
Or, you go to a Toyota Five-Star Dealer. That's the elite group for special customer care, not every Toyota dealer qualifies. The Five-Star Dealers will have four Sumo wrestlers gently lift your car up in the air, by hand, to ensure that the chassis isn't scratched by those nasty mechanical lifts.
