Pistons - source?

Postby erictharg » Wed Nov 09, 2016 11:48 pm

My race 16V engine is currently based on a 90k mile donor short block from an MR2 with my head and Kent 1013 cams on it. Has run well for half a season circuit racing (7500 rev limit). However, as mentioned in my earlier post it has to come out to solve a bad rear crank oil seal leak so I'm thinking I should maybe replace the stock 9.4:1 pistons (7 rib big port engine) with some of the later spec 10.3:1 small port pistons (with a rebore and hone, obviously). However I'm struggling to find any good quality pistons to that spec (OE or better). I can get the usual Wossner or Wiseco items but that means GBP600 and for the engine spec those forged pistons are really over the top.
Anyone know where I could find some good small port spec pistons 0.5mm oversize? Thanks.

I bought these. Quality is okay.

I'm going to have them coated though.

I am doing an upgrade on my 16v using these pistons and a smallport head/inlet and 42mm crank & rods.

I couldn't justify spending £500 or more on pistons that we not going to see the power they were designed to take.

Worth a look. Thanks. My local 4AGE experts think they have a set of +0.5 Wiseco's from a customer engine that have only run 500 miles (if they can find them!) that sound promising too.

I bought the same ones you can see on ebay. Didn't coat them. Even balanced them by drilling underside of crown, very shallow very conservative drillings. If you're bored you can watch the balancing video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YMMQnBdVW4
Installed, fired up engine. 150 miles so far. Everything looks great, lots of compression, knock on wood.
Lots of people saying balancing this way is a no-go, I checked with experienced engine builders before putting them in and got a green light.
Engine mostly stock, very mild cams with 8 lift and 244 duration from catcams, bored 0.5mm, honed, balanced entire rotating assembly, hks valve srpings, all new OEM gaskets, T3 cam pulleys, everything else stock.

I got mine from a GM parts desk for cheap; first-oversize OEM coated 10.3:1 from the geo prism gsi.. I want to say like two hundred bucks, but I don't remember, that was a long time ago. I think I contacted a guy who was a midwest4AG member who happened to work at said shop; I'm sure other contacts can be made, maybe even if you know someone at a toyota parts shop, they might be able to get you parts at their cost.
