Help needed!!! Kouki SR5 rear disc conversion

Postby jdv824 » Sun Oct 04, 2015 6:07 pm

I've been looking and can't find anything. Want to convert my car to rear disc. I know that it's easier to replace the whole dif but my car is an automatic and base on what I read I can't put a manual dif with a automatic transmission. I got the GT-S calipers already but don't know if I can do the conversion without replacing the whole dif.

Thank you just checked for prices and it's not that expensive. The only thing is not having a e brake. My car is an automatic and I park it on the driveway so jumping from P to D it's going to damage the tranny. Know this from past experience

Does anyone knows how to add e brake calipers for this set up?

A while back I had asked about rear disc conversions...

I still haven't gotten around to doing anything yet. I'll probably need something custom due to wanting to keep e-brakes.

I wonder if you can install gts backing plates and put the calipers and rotors but I don't think it's going to be that easy.

The flanges on the GTS and SR5 housings have different bolt patterns. The GTS backing plates won't bolt right up to an SR5 axle without modification.

I'm not going to say that you shouldn't convert a SR5 rear end to discs, but I am
wondering if all the effort is really going to be worth the end result ? Most of the
braking is done by the front wheels that already have discs. The factory designed
the braking system to be safe and balanced with discs in front and drums in back,
and you can have handling issues if you change the front-rear braking bias.

If you are still running the SR5 engine with an auto, I'd suggest that you look into
getting some new drums (or get the old ones skimmed) and a new set of shoes.
That might give you all the braking you need at the moment, and you can keep
an eye out for a complete GTS rear end to install when you upgrade the engine
and change to a manual gearbox.
