What Parts NEEDED in the AE86/4AG Market (5/8/2014)

Postby AZNWOKZ » Sat Feb 16, 2013 4:05 pm

what kind of parts are needed in the AE86/4AG Market

As the AE86 is now a classic car, I thought it would be nice to brain storm what kind of parts are needed as well as needs to be more expose more. Even thought some exist right now, but the quality is just not there or just not well market to be discovered.

So I gonna search around and my old bookmarks of stuff that is currently in the market. Such as the dashboard is well known to be cracked. Please put your thoughts of what is lacking in the market or a solution of where to get these kind of services to solve that solution.

Window moldings
Windows- Windsheild, side windows, rear,etc
Weather stripping
Coupe Tail lights
Floor Plans metal replacements

Rocker Panel( Common rust area)

I would say the availablility and price of a cargo/privacy cover. I found one but its in poor shape. the fiber board is cracking. i was thinking of a fpr replacement top. also any kind of interior parts are going to be tough to replace too. its so unfair how you can buy brand new interior for any classic chevy and ford but nothing for our aging ae86. it would be cool to get a replacement seat upholstry kits that is pre fitted instead of having to get them made/talored from scratch by your upholstry guy.

Having already worked in the restoration field... (64 1/2 -73 Mustangs back in the early 1990s) I can tell you one of the most important things... are things like beltline moldings, door/trunk gaskets, etc... things that get serious decay even on a well maintained car.

Besides the decaying rubber bits... things like decals(descriptive as well as exterior - like underhood specs, or vacuum routing...) Again... these items tend to decay over time.

Sheet metal.... Original Ford bits use to sell for BIG money (67 Mustang red primer fender could sell for $1500... back in 1990!) There were 2 reasons for this... 1) The original gauge Ford stamped....later sheet metal was often one or 2 gauges thinner... and the reproduction metal was 3 or 4 gauges thinner  2) quality... often times a piece of re-production sheet metal would need HOURS of fitting time, where as the OEM piece could be hung in short order.

Finally... an accepted and recognition based organization... like the MCA (Mustang Club of America). Although these guys have their fair share of "haters", they did help focus and define WHAT an original Mustang is... what it isn't... and then how to group similar staged cars so in a car show each person would know (based on what level or type of restoration done) where his, or her car competed. They would give their stamp of approval on QUALITY restoration parts - this would go a long way toward properly re-engineering rare and sometimes unique parts (example - 1970 only Cobra Jet engine coolant transfer pipes)

Another thing I would like to address is AE86 Body Panals are are almost imposible to find to replace.
The most known example is underbody side panel/rocker panal/ skid skit body panel. If you live near snow areas, AE86 have known, if not old cars in general, have them.

Definitely LHD dash boards. Bee-r makes the RHD Carbon fiber ones and so does McNsport.. they need to get on that LHD market. My dash looks like it did meth and then dated Chris Brown.

1) FLOOR PANS!
2) Also agree with the tail lights. Coupes get the shaft. LED style obviously
3) Carbon LHD dashes is also something I would totally buy. Not the covers/skins. DMAC style

In 20 years, we're all going to be old and want a stock restored car, not the ratty stripped race car I have now. All mouldings and rubbers and interior trim pieces will be highly sought after. The cool thing about our interiors is there are only a few major options: coupe v hatch, LHD v RHD, GTS trim v SR5 trim, then a couple colors. But all the plastics are the same, one mould will make all the color combos and they can be marketed worldwide. All the door trim is the same worldwide regardless of coupe v hatch, etc. Rear window and trunk/hatch trim are the same worldwide for all hatches and all coupes. So ALL restoration parts are going to be desirable in the future. Dashboards (not covers) consoles, seats (yes I want SR5 seats) headliners, mirrors, switches, shift knobs and boots.

Look at any used, beat up AE86. What parts are damaged or missing because of misuse or neglect. ALL of those things need replacement options.

+1 on the coupe tails (zenki as well as kouki)
any replacement body panel, fenders, rear quarters etc
also having any reproduction levin conversion body parts would be nice. its one thing to ship a pair of headlights from out of country but having a source staeside for fenders, bumpers, hoods and the like would definitley be easier on the wallet shipping wise
and non-egr manifolds would be excellent too

" its so unfair how you can buy brand new interior for any classic chevy and ford but nothing for our aging ae86."

gagoosh, trust me on that one. When my '68 Mustang was 20 years old, you couldn't buy squat for it. The replacement parts market didn't really take off until all those old pny cars were 30++ years old, which are cars aren't yet.

And, you have to remember that for any one year, there may be 100x more Camaros or Mustangs than there are for any ten years worth of Corollas. If Detroit sold 100,000 units they called it a lean year. If Toyota sold 5000 GT-Ses in any one year, they were ecstatic.

Which really puts a choke on the replacement parts market. Something like a rear cargo cover is a fast easy thing to mold up from frp or sheet plastic. Except, if you can only sell 25 in a year, it becomes a damned expensive thing. Even if you plan to make a five year supply and stack 'em in a warehouse someplace.

And of course, if you want new upholstery for a pony car, here's the black vinyl, have a nice day. For a GT-S? Right, you just try to match that quirky little pattern someplace! Can't match it? Woops, need all new seats, new door panels, new wheel well trim panels...Well, custom is nice.<G>

I have to agree with red on this one. I came form the mustang scene, and the restoration aftermarket is huge. It is huge for classic, and it is also growing for the 'late model' mustang scene, pretty much 2004 and below. I would love to have the AE86 get that kind of aftermarket support, but I just think here in America it would not be profitable to do so. In about 10 years there will probably be a small import restoration movement, so a few companies may spring up form that(My guess is that they will be Honda/Acura focused, maybe some DSM for nostalgia. Gotta follow what will make the most money) I think the Ae86 will be left out, there really are not a lot of these cars left.

Only way I could see it work is if it was a wrold wide effort of sorts. They may be scarce in America, but what about the rest of the world? Could be enouhg support, but that really would be a maybe to get it off the ground. Plus, one side will get the shaft, LHD or RHD.

What options do we have for door sill stickers these days? The big ones across the lower door panel?

And does anyone have a real set stashed away that could be used as a master for reproductions?
