Velocity stack size/length ?

Postby phanist » Sat Dec 07, 2013 1:12 pm

Hi guy

Im seeking help on the velocity stack in market for blacktop..
Im intending to use a custom air for the itb on my blacktop.
So my question is so u need to use a velocity stack? Or just use a air box with a cone filter and stackless?

What stack length available on market? And where to source them.
Thank guy

I may want to use the shortest length stack for air box.

Anything else done to the engine? Shorter stacks will push the usable harmonics induction up in the rev range. Usually out of the usable range of an unmodified engine. Longer stacks will, conversely, bring it down.

This guy offers some advice on intake harmonic tuning. He cites Bill Sherwood's page.

Excellent choice of parts. What are you planning on doing with the car? That'll decide a lot about where you want power, which will determine what length of stacks you should run.

The really good thing is that stacks aren't hard to change. You can always keep a few sets around for specific applications.

What are you wanting as an acceptable redline? Understand that the higher it is, the faster the wear parts of your engine will wear.

I like power in the middle of the rev range. Corner apex RPM. That's where the 4A needs help. That's where you'll find yourself on the street or autocross. My understanding is that drifting is all top end. I'd say track time is somewhere between the two.

So, if you're wanting a car for drifting; find a good RPM between redline and where the RPMs drop to when shifting at redline. Use this as your target power RPM. This makes sure that, as long as you're in the right gear, you are making power. For autocross and daily, the RPM drop point might be a good choice.

The good news is that you can try a few different options, even keep a few on hand for drift days, daily-ing, etc.

For what it's worth, SQ Engineering makes stacks as short as 43mm for silvertop, 50mm for blacktop. Quite a bit less money than the SP-Tec stacks listed above.

What engine management system are you running? Just the stock ECU?

Grant

I think the 50mm is a bit too long for the air box.. I did check out battlegarage website.

I actually used stacks that were about 40mm or so in my own car, with a factory air box. Although some report power gains with short stacks in the factory box, I actually realized a loss. This could be because I converted the air inlet from the "front" of the box, to feeding from the side, though. Maybe there was unequal feeding of the cylinders.

At any rate I moved to Pipercross (sorry I wrote ITG earlier, that is incorrect) filter over long stacks and never looked back. Your goals may be different than mine (reduced noise or something).

Good luck!

If you want to use long stacks you may order 100mm ST or BT stacks but you use a pipercross filter.

110mm stacks have a larger bell mouth, mainly for appearance, but they will not work behind any filter.
To be clear, 100mm stacks ONLY work with a pipercross adapter plate and a pipercross filter =)
The ITG unit will only clear 70mm or shorter stacks, like T3, etc.
