AE86 manual rack

Postby skljdh » Mon Sep 30, 2013 6:16 pm

I just bought an original corolla manual rack and was looking for suggestions on where to have it rebuilt in So.Cal? Preferably with good experiences but most importantly quality work!

Thanks in advance!

Unless you are going to be replacing the steering shaft/pinion shaft (shorter gear), there is not much to do when rebuilding them. If the rack is not bent, it probably just needs to be re-greased. You can take them apart yourself and just re-grease everything and paint the housing. Then assemble it with new bellows and tie rods. Its pretty simple to take it apart. Literally, a big lego with like 3 or 4 pieces.

Check the service manual. As Jeonsah said, they are prety simple, though. There is a tensioner that holds the rack in place so it doesn't move around and it's a lot easier to resassemble things when you remove or loosen the tensioner.
