Where can i get my Zenki LSD rebuild in LA CA?

Postby johnny_86 » Fri Sep 20, 2013 4:37 pm

Does anyone know of any good shops that do rebuilds on LSD's here in Los Angeles, CA. And if anyone has any info on the rebuild kit from techno toy tuning.

rebuilding a LSD is fairly simple if you already have the lsd out and bare. i highly recommend using the Weir Performance MaxGrip kit as the clutch discs are larger then the OEM clutch disc of a OEM rebuild kit. i've had the maxgrip kit in my rear end for the last 2 years, seen about 5 track days, alot of aggressive drifting and grip, still locks up nice. you can find some threads that walk you step by step on how to rebuild the lsd, just gotta do a search, might want to look on the old forums also.

Any decent 4x4 shop would be where I would go. Get a weir kit and bring it to them so you just pay for their labor. Best advice I ever got was from a 4x4 guy to run 85-140 with my diff. Made it much quieter and didn't thin out so much in the high heat/stress of the track.

The weir stuff can be found at weir performance's website. They were the most reasonable and best stocked for corolla rearend parts/rebuilding. They also carry lsd units, axles and ring and pinion gears.
http://weirperformance.com/

If you have a zenki gts differential, and you want the lsd unit itself rebuilt, you want the maxgrip lsd rebuild kit, along with new carrier bearings, pinion bearing, pinion seal and solid pinion spacer. Since the whole carrier (the center part of the rearend) will have to be disassembled to rebuild an lsd, you will want to replace the bearings and such while it is apart so it doesn't have to be done again. The biggest cost on a rebuilding something like a rearend doesn't come from parts, but labor. Expect ~2 hours to simply take a carrier apart and reset backlash/pinion depth and maybe another 1-2 hours for the lsd rebuild. If you can be without your car for a few days, you can also ship your carrier to weir performance and they will do the service as well (very experienced shop).

This is what the carrier by itself looks like:

As for the 85-140, that's the weight of the oil. I recommend it for ANY rearend that expects to see some sort of abuse. The stock weight used is 80-90, which thins out when it heats up. As for the friction modifier used in most lsd units, I always had success with the ford stuff (~$5 a bottle). Keep in mind I say 85-140 ONLY in the rearend, stick with 80-90 in the transmission or you will face shifting issues.

Thanks for all this information i tried calling Weir Performance and no answer i guess its hard to get a hold of them but im really thinking of going with Weir and getting new bearings and seals as well. As for the labor someone was kind enough to hit me up and let me know they do LSD.

Just make sure they know what they are doing.

I can take a differential apart and put it back together, making it look just fine. Odds are it will probably howl when I take it down the road and ruin the ring and pinion gears. With all the scams going on these days, find out if they have a shop and what kind of experience they have rebuilding things like rearends. Lots of shadetree mechanics out there...

^^^^I've been doing Weir's blown up rear ends. But i didn't say that. Buy parts from them, but don't have them setup your pinion. There are numberous horror stories from them. If not me, I would recommend K1 (Pass Racing) as Jackie as been building corollas forever as well.
