Replaced speedo driven gear...speedo still not working

Postby Benjamos86 » Thu Sep 19, 2013 6:26 pm

So, maybe a month or two ago while I was driving I noticed my speedo was not working. Did some research and saw that the plastic driven gear seems to usually be the problem. Well I just got done changing that tonight finally after putting it off and went for a spin after finishing and still have no speedo. I was just trying to see if anyone else knows what another common problem may be besides the driven gear. Whether it may be the cable or the drive gear which I hope it is not Anyone have any suggestions on what I should look at next? Tips are appreciated!

The speedo DrivE gear is steel versus the DriveN gear that is plastic... steel wins :)

So you need to check:
1. Does the end of the spindle from the DriveN gear rotate if you jack up one
rear wheel and spin it ?
2. Is the end (square from memory) of the cable that connects to the gearbox
still there and is it still square... not worn round and no longer being driven ?
3. If you turn the end of the inner cable (push it in first to make sure it is engaged
in the back of the speedo), can you get the speedo needle to twitch ? You might
need to force a short piece of vacuum tube onto the inner so that you can spin it
with your fingers.
4. If the speedo needle does not move, or the inner will not rotate, you will need
to get your hand up under the dash and remove the cable.
5. Check to see if the cable is broken or seized. Replace or repair as needed.

Put a drill on the cable and see if the speedo needle moves.

Thanks for the replies. So I checked the spindle at the end of the gear while spinning a rear wheel and that spins so that's the good news. The bad news is I put a piece of vacuum tube over the inner cable, pushed it to make sure it was engaged at the speedo and spun it as fast as I could with my fingers and got nothing...must be a bad cable I guess. It is definitely spinning, feels a little rough but it spins. As for the end where it goes into the tranny, it is not a square end but it has a square tit on the side of it that must be lined up with the end of the gear in the tranny or it wont even allow the cable to go in there all the way so I assume that end of the cable is not broken. Guess it is broken somewhere in the middle...
