Check Engine Light is on...NEED HELP!

Postby dcal » Thu Aug 15, 2013 10:52 am

The engine light comes on when I accelerate. I took it to the dealer and the mechanic told me that he couldn't get a true code reading because some of my wire harness connections are bad, from age, and I have to get a new harness just to find out what’s wrong with it. That's about 2000 dollars worth of work that I don't have right now. He said the sensors are all working correctly. Is there anything else I can have done to the car, new gas cap, new spark plug wires, any process of elimination, something to try and solve this problem without going the "engine harness" route? The car is running fine right now but the light came on three days ago. After getting it from the dealer it REALLY stays on now! You guys have really helped me in the pass and any ideas would be appreciated!!

if your cel is staying on then pull the codes your self. that will give you a general starting point at least. also try ti repair the original harness to save those dollars 2 grand is not worth it you can get your harness completely repaired for about 500 bux from a good professional

Thanks for the reply. How do I go about pulling the codes? Is that pretty easy to do? I'm not a mechanic and I really don't know how to pull the codes from the car myself but you're right with trying to get the harness repaired which will be alot cheaper. Now to find a good auto electrician in the DC area!!!! Thanks again!

Probably best to do a search on engine codes and how to access them.
Is your speedometer working ok ?

check your FSM to show you how to check codes (and if you don't have one there are PDF's floating around somewhere). if the jumpers in the engine bay are bad, you may be able to jump the wires from the back of the ECU harness (but don't quote me on that! lol)

A brand new engine harness is a "last resort" type thing.

Need more info on car though for others to help you out.
Year/Model

If you have a 4age, there's a diagnostic manual link in my sig. Read up on it.
Once you're able to read the codes, this should help
