ECU/tuning

Postby Sepheroth86 » Fri Apr 30, 2021 6:04 am

All,

After a decade or more of hiatus on the AE86 front, I am looking into getting back into the car.

Since I am well out of the loop, what ECU or tuning options are available for these cars nowadays?

Looking to stay N/A.

Suggest you talk with Battle Garage about Haltech... https://shop.battlegarage-rs.com/collec ... nd_haltech
They should be able to hook you up with all you need.

What does everyone do for a mild N/A setup?

I am not looking to go balls to the wall with the car...

Regardless of what is done to the Corolla, my daily will likely be significantly faster anyway.

what do you consider "mild"?

Stock a 4AGE makes about 112-115hp at the flywheel. Keeping stock management, stock cams, stock intake, and stock exhaust, I managed to make 120 whp (130-135 @ the flywheel). (dyno on left is measuring engine hp, dyno on right is measuring wheel hp)

Arguably... torque is more important in a 4AGE, and this engine makes significant gains over a completely stock 4AGE.

All it took was a set of smallport pistons, a carefully ported head, and a squish(quench) gap of .032"(.8mm)

I suppose that I was thinking of using a smallport engine, and a set of cams with an aftermarket intake manifold and exhaust/header. This would have a static compression ratio in the mid 10:1 range, if I recall correctly.

In my experience with Honda B series engines over the years, one did not seem to make much more power once above 11:1 compression without using race fuel/e85.

Just using a smallport, but making the squish gap a bit tighter(.9mm instead of 1.2mm) by running the appropriate gasket will bump compression to nearly 10.7 (from 10.3). That will work well with a set of mild "264 type" cams. I would recommend a ported head, to further improve performance.

As far as aftermarket engine management - the lesson I learned - buying the ECU before finding a tuning ship is a lot like the old adage of putting the cart before the horse. My recommendation would be to shop tuning shops near you, learn their reputations. When you find a shop you trust, ask what they are familiar tuning on. This method makes your time tuning minimal because the shop knows the platform already - or, in other words, you don't have to pay the shop to learn how to tune the ECU you bought before hand........

as Jondee mentioned , Haltech by Battle Garage (Grant) , Monsoon Link by RNR Autosport, MS2PNP Gen2 from diyautotune.
those are quite familiar with the 4age 16V and 20V.

good luck
