Cluster lights not coming on after steering wheel swap

Ok, so last year I swapped from a stock steering wheel on mt 87' GTS to a classic momo long hub and Tom's steering wheel. Horn and everything work, but my cluster will not illuminate. This past week I briefly took the hub off to paint it then when I put it back on...everything worked again! I put it back on just slightly crooked so I then took it back off to make it straight, resulting in again...no cluster lights :'(

So is there some ground that is loose or am I just doing this all wrong? Turn signal indicators are lined up and working so Idk would would be off. Please, if anyone could help me I'd be seriously grateful! -Joel

Power comes from the Taillight Fuse in J/B#1. Runs thru the cluster lights,
then via the cluster dimmer control to the Headlight Switch, where it gets
switched to ground. Taillight Fuse gets its power from the Taillight Relay,
also in J/B#1.

There doesn't seem to be any electrical linkup that would put your cluster
lights out of action. So as you suggest, possibly a loose connection somewhere
around the steering column that gets annoyed when you thump on the wheel
to get it off the spline :)

When this happens does the hvac, cig light, etc. also not work? If so it could be a bad solder connection in the headlight switch which is a fairly common problem. Bumping the dash could make the connection intermittent. You could try tapping on the headlight switch knob (or smack the dash around the switch) to see if there's any change; that's what I do to mine when the dash lights don't work..
