6 speed adapter

Well i posted this on a different forum, but it's kind of dead. So I'm posting it on here. I wanted one of the leen adapters, but they vanished. So using the faro scanarm at school i scanned a j160 case and created a 3d model. With that model i made the toolpaths and am almost finished making my own.

very nice indeed..... are you planning on changing the shifter, or just relocating it to the forward mount position??

I plan on changing the shifter, even in the forward location it is too far back for my car.

Give me a few weeks.... if you are interested..... I've purchased the plans/designs for the LEEN shifter, and production should begin again shortly...... don't yet know the cost.

btw... SQ Engineering has developed a BEAMS J160 adapter plate..... http://www.sq-engineering.com/upgrade-p ... r-kit.html

I am not entirely sure why everybody keeps making these adapters for the J160. The gear ratios are not really that much better than the stock AE86 ratios, except for the 3-4 shift.

If you make one for the S2000 trans, I would buy one off you.

It is a more modern design of gearbox, so pretty much by definition it shifts
better and it is a lot stronger. It is also readily available in good used condition
at a reasonable price.

Gear ratios may or may not be better, but if the gearstick position can match
the factory shifter, then I'll be down for one when my T-50 dies :)

You can add the s15 6th gear for a little over $100 and have almost the same od ratio as the mfactory 5th for the t50. You end up with slightly better ratios, not much but slightly. And it is stronger than a t50, plus by machining my own adapter it'll be cheaper than rebuilding the t50 that won't go into 1st while moving, and likes the grind going into 3rd.

SQ mentioned a shifter relocation but I haven't seen anything more. I'm dying for a J160 shifter relocation.

Another plus for the aisin is that for a clutch i can get an exedy off of amazon in under a week. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001NYI2 ... UTF8&psc=1 this is what i have to put in, fits the splines properly and is 200mm diameter.

there are other ratios.....

AZ6 gear ratios....

J160/SXE10 6 sp 3.874 2.175 1.484 1.223 1.000 0.869

S15 6 spd 3.626 2.200 1.541 1.213 1.000 0.767
NISMO 2.907 1.989 1.537 1.218 1.000 0.862
RX8 6 spd 3.760 2.269 1.645 1.187 1.000 0.843
Miata 6-spd 99- 3.760 2.269 1.645 1.257 1.000 0.843
TRD(33030-SE100) 3.106 2.175 1.585 1.223 1.000 0.869

HKS also made a few gear sets too... no longer available, but they might be found on YJ.

My dream version would be using the J160's 1st gear, then the Miata 2nd-5th, and finally finishing with the S15's 6th. As my car currently is 3.9 final with the stock J160 ratios.... my car is fast and capable.... I never feel I'm in the wrong gear.

I guess what I"m looking for is not the same as the rest of you. Strength isn't really a concern since I'm N/A, and i don't want to be sourcing gear ratios from multiple transmissions. In addition the trans is not readily available in the USA since it was never offered here, hence parts are not as easy to come by.

I have a hard time believing that but that's entirely your opinion.

Parts are easy, seals can be gotten from a mazda dealer since the rx8 and miata used a variation of it. Clutch is on amazon, output is the same as a w58 box. Synchros shouldn't be an issue unless you are really beating on things.

I've never broken a T50 through a decade of drifting, road racing, r compound tires and the like. I have 3 spares and 2 are rebuilt, so ratios are more important to me than anything. Getting an aftermarket kit for the T50 would probably cost the same as a conversion kit for a better transmission like the S2k. If i couldn't find T50's, or was forced induction, then I'd probably go with J160.

I've been living with a T50 and 4.3 for a long time. Despite the fact that
a lot of people say the T50 ratios are less than perfect, I have found them
entirely satisfactory for normal driving (city traffic to spirited). Sure, on
the race track the ratios are not ideal. If you want to get serious you have
to hunt down an aftermarket gear set and change the diff ratio to suit your
needs. Or buy a custom dog box and choose the exact ratios you want.

That's what sets a dedicated race car apart from a daily driver.

But I don't have a dedicated race car. So if the choice comes down to trying
to fix/replace a broken T50 or dropping in a good low mileage J160, I'd be
looking real hard at the J160 option. The only thing that remains to be
sorted in having a kit to relocate the shifter to the stock position. Once
that is available, the rest of the conversion is easy.

First up, apologies to the OP for taking this thread off topic. If you would rather not
have this pic in your thread, let me know and It will be deleted.

@oldeskewltoy
While talking about the possibility of a shifter relocation kit becoming a reality; can
I ask how this would work with our locally available J160 conversion kit ?

Image

I'd guess the plate to be 20mm thick,,, so what datum would you be using when
fixing the location for the shifter ? Bolting face on the back of the block ? Of course
plus or minus 20mm would be no big deal, but it would be nice to know how it would
work out with this style of adapter.

If it is the leen part, itll move the shifter to where the 4 bolt holes are for attaching the upper bolts on the stock shifter.

The original LEEN adapter was also longer (needing a pilot bearing extension) by approximately 19mm, so with the shifter relocation kit it should still fit in about the same place..... Image

note 2 extensions below clutch disc on left... and 4 bearings (2x) pilot bearings

Ok, got it reprogrammed and posted. Total machine time is under 5 hours now. Also fixed the outside so it closer matches the transmission instead of having .1" overhang.

I'm curious to see the price.

Some of Chohdog and jondee86's opinions are similar to mine. As far as I know the j160 was never oem equippednon tue US. Also closebratio yransm

OST is working on the shift relocation. But for the adapter between material cost, tooling, machine time, and finishing touches without a pilot extension it would be close to $1200 to break even. To add a stainless guide for the throw out and pilot extension would add probably 3-500 to that due to material costs, having to hire a cnc lathe and a tig welder. But as of this moment i have not had time or money to install the one i made into my car to test it, and i will not sell any until i have had it on the road and know everything works properly.
