Would anyone be able to inform me of the physical specs of trd springs and stock springs i.e inner diameter, outer diameter, height, length, etc. Thanks in advance

This is a pic of a spring I pulled from my car (Euro spec AE86) which I believe
to be the same spec as the JDM AE86 (GTS equivalent).

Maybe that helps a little ?

For posterity, and just in case anyone else wonders what stock springs look like,
I have added a pic and the basic dimensions. These springs were pulled from a
stock Euro spec AE86, and according to the information I have, the spring rates
are 1.8kg/mm front and 2.2kg/mm rear (GTV spec on JDM models).

Image

The front spring is the top one, and the end of the spring on the righthand side
of the pic is the end that is at the top of the spring when it is installed on the car.

FRONT SPRING
10.5mm wire diameter
135mm outside diameter main coils
116mm outside diameter last (top) coil
92mm pitch main coils
380mm free length
Top coil closed and ground. Bottom coil partly closed.

REAR SPRING
11.0mm wire diameter
130mm outside diameter
72mm pitch
345 free length
Top coil closed and ground. Bottom coil partly closed.

Great info!

It makes me wonder if the US spring dimensions are the same. After I lightened my car (levin front end, frp hood, ac/power steer delete, jdm rear bumper) and switched back to oem springs it seems like my ride height is higher than normal (especially when comparing to pics in the jdm brochures).

Jondee86 - Any chance you have a side profile pic of your car when it had the oem springs?

Haven't been able to find a pic of my car, but this one looks stock...

Image

Pretty sure that those wheels will be 13's with 70 or 80-series tires. Because the
factory springs have quite low rates, they will raise the car a bit when you start
taking weight out. Although 40kg out of the front would only lift around 10mm.

Ha... did a bit of digging and found this from the time I first got this car....

Image

Those were 15 x 7 rims with 50-series tires. I changed to different wheels and
springs soon after, but the springs in the pic above would have been under there :)

That's a great looking car!

That stance looks great, especially if those are indeed oem springs. It's definitely lower than USDM, and looks close to what's shown in the old brochures. I thought the brochure pics might have edited/chopped the ride height for photo aesthetics, but I couldn't seem to find any real pics of overseas models confirmed to be on oem springs to compare.

Here's my car when I first got it, 100% stock 185/60/14 tires:

Image

And now 195/60/14 tires:

Image

My ballpark guess is 3/8" (about 10 mm) difference in height from before to after, mainly on the front from where the majority of the mass was removed.

I do know the US spring rates are basically the same. I thought it was 1.9 kg/mm (I've also heard 1.8) front, and 2.2 kg/mm rear.

Both of these have lowering springs...

Image

The one on the left had 13 x 6 all round with 205/60 tires (bad choice) and around 35mm down.
The one one the right has 14 x 6 in front with 185/55 tires (good choice) and is about 40mm down.

I personally like the 14's for casual driving, and am happy with the car at that height. There
is room for a reasonable amount of suspension travel (3/2.8kg/mm springs), no rubbing issues
and the car does not drag its ass on driveways and speed bumps. It's not far off the legal mnimum
height, and if I want a bit lower I have some 13's that will do it :)

I also prefer 14's. It's a shame the selection of tires available in that diameter is so poor in the USA.

You have the blue espelir asd springs right? I had them briefly, here's a pic with the same 195/60/14 tires:

Image

I loved the stance, but my - at the time - new Bilstein shocks were bottoming out on 3/4 corners under different types of aggressive driving so I swithched back to oem. Perhaps the asd springs were a bit tired (bought them used) since the ride height seemed lower than advertised.

My plan is to eventually get some custom linear springs wound with rates similar to the asd springs, but only around a 25 mm drop from where I'm at now, or resist trying some tanabe gf210 springs for less than half the price.

Yes, I'm using the blue Espelirs and AGX inserts. From memory I cut one lump
off the bumpstops, and the only time it bottoms is when I hit a decent dip or
bump at speed. Grip level is good, comfort level is good, so the setup works
well with the kind of roads we have here.
