Is my AE86 considered totaled??

Two days ago I was rear ended by a 2006 Jeep Commander. It looks like I will not be able to repair the damage. I am going to wait to buy the rebadged Scion FRS.

Opinions do help. If you want to see the damage I can e-mail the pictures. I am not sure how to show the pictures on here.

In terms of a salvage title in the eyes of an insurance company likely so, but it's hard to say without pics.

Ouch! Sorry dude that is totaled for sure. Good thing you're ok.

On my last ae86 I had an incident where the radiator support and rear panel were caved in. Although it looked minor compared to yours it was still totaled out. Most insurance only value these things around $600. If it wasn't your fault make sure to play hardball. In my case the other guys insurance company initially offered me around $1200 and I refused. I ended up getting over $4500 for the vehicle value alone, and that wasn't accounting for any aftermarket stuff since I didn't have receipts. Make sure to let them know these cars are sought after/rare and the value reflects such.

Wow that is a sad sight to see. What kind of insurance did you have for it? I agree with Deuce Cam about refusing lowball offers if it wasn't your fault (rear-ending is nearly always the other drivers fault).

One issue is apparently most insurance companies don't honor any "agreed value" so they just pay what they think it is worth. I have now switched my car over to classic car insurance which allows me to tell them the current value of my car, and they will guarantee that value will be paid out as long as it is reasonable.

For my insurance for the AE86 I had 'no coverage' for collision, comprehensive and personal injury protection. It is already ruled as not my fault. The assessor is supposed to look at it tomorrow. So it sounds like I should show proof that these cars are sought after by enthusiasts that would want to collect, restore and modify right?

It shouldn't matter since you aren't at fault. Start compiling proof/examples of realistic value. Wait for the offer. If you don't like their offer provide the examples. If that doesn't work tell them that they aren't being realistic/fair and ask for them to provide an independent appraisal for value.

Thanks for the information. I'll look for the 'proof/examples of realistic value'.

Fellow AE86 enthusiasts,

My car did have a previous salvaged title and the guy at Farmers insurance offered $480 at first. Then he said he would make it an additional $200 dollars for 'loss of use' for a total of $680. Honestly I believe this will be the most I can realistically obtain.

Any one believe I can get more or should I go ahead and accept this offer?

Thanks for everyone's advice and information.

I would't take it. Keep looking around for values on the car. Unfortunately you have to keep fighting them to get what is the proper amount and sometimes it takes a while. Hang in there.

maybe post up another inquiry thread..."How much would you realistically pay for this car" and provide the full list of work done and parts added. or let the insurance company try that, lol. have them sign up here. what are people willing to pay? that's really what you lost, since, you never get back what you put in.

P3nnyw1se, Morgan amd everyone else. Thanks for your input. I am going to take their offer and move on towards the FRS/GT86. I do want to put this behind me and move forward. I learned a lot about working on Cars from my AE86. I treasure those memories of bloody knuckles and grease and antifreeze in those wounds. Even with those rubber gloves on. I do need to see about removing the Cusco T50 mount.

Damn, thats sad to see. I went through a similar ordeal when my hatch got side swiped by a Civic. $2-3k in damage but my adjuster was very thorough and he knew a lot about 86's and how rare it is. Put a $6500 value on it and he approved the repairs instead of salvage.
