AC Idler Pulley Advice

Postby dcal » Fri Sep 11, 2015 12:06 pm

Hey Guys!! I need your help again. I am trying to replace my ac idler pulley and it seems to be discontinued (Toyota Dealers and web sites). The problem is it's squeaking like crazy which I do believe the bearings are worn. WD40 works for a minute but that's it!! I've been looking on the web for an aftermarket part but what I keep finding is the one that fits the V-belt. (Rockauto.com GATES 38036 {#231039, 89039} DriveAlign Premium OE Pulley), if this is the right one. Of course we have the flat belt. Do you know of any place where I can buy one or does anyone out there have one that's in good condition? Anything you all can tell me would be appreciated.

Thanks again for your help!!

Instead of replacing the pulley, could you try to find out what bearing it uses and just buy a new bearing? You should be able to press the old one out and put the new one right in.

Found an unrelated, but maybe helpful post: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=5895
They mention a PFI bearing (PFI P# 6908-2RS C3).

If you are able to take the bearing out just measure the outer/inner diameters and thickness to make sure they match.

Thanks Grant for your advice and the linked information. I think that's what I'll have to do since it's been so hard to replace it. If anyone else has anything to add or a pulley in good condition, all is welcomed!!! Thanks again guys!

You might be able to source a compatible part from another Toyota. The trucks with 3vz and 5vz engine, the Prius 1nzfxe, use similar idler pulleys that might be near the same size. I'm sure some of the engines of the same era might have something. I'm not even sure what engine you have but looks a bit like a 4ac. Cannibalism is the name of the game. Good luck.

The bearing is replaceable as I replaced mine a few years ago.

Nice! Which bearing did you end up using? Post the part number here for future reference. :)

:D Sure! The bearing is used is 6908-2RS Sealed Bearing 40x62x12. Here's the website where it's located:

I hope this helps!
