I know this has been covered several times over but I'm going to replace my axle.ill be renting the slide hammer tool from oreilly
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I jack up the car, remove brake caliper and rotor, then the 4 bolts, attach the hammer and pull. Reverse for install?? And I should put grease in there too right?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance
axle replacement question
Re: axle replacement question
Yes, you should be able to pull the axle shaft out with a slide hammer as described. But after 30yrs, the axle to bearing contact could have a fair amount of rust locking it in. I had to actually heat the out side surface around the bearing area to extract the axle. Luckly I had already planned on replacing the bearing. If you are pulling the axle to replace the bearing, check out professionalautoparts.com for the replace bearing, P/N K8000-23939. This is the stock AE86 SKF bearing and at half the price that Toyota charges. Dave W
Re: axle replacement question
Mine came out fairly easily with a slide hammer but my car has lived in PHX AZ for all it's life.
If only surface rust clean the inside of the tube where the bearing sits with brake parts cleaner, scotch bright pad from a grocery store, and rags. Once clean apply a light coat of bearing grease to the tube and bearing. Install process is the reverse of what you described.
Side note: Get new axle flange gaskets. I'd also get new axle seals and a seal puller tool just in case you find they need to be replaced while you're in there.

Re: axle replacement question
I'd replace the seal while you're in there. It might not seal well after you pull the axle and you won't know until you put it back together and drive for a while. Harbor Freight has a good seal puller. You can also get these at most auto parts stores.

Re: axle replacement question
All in all the gig took about an hour and a half. Removal was literally 30 minutes and then I had to change out the wheel studs, but went a lot easier than I thought it would. Thanks for the help everyone! No more wheel wobble, and back to smooth sailing
