AE86 Headlight, Wiper, and Defroster Lights Not Working

Postby yellowsnow4free » Mon Jan 12, 2015 2:49 pm

Hey everyone!

It has been a while since I've posted here.

Over the weekend I repaired my headlight switch (dash lights were intermittent) using the guide on the old forum; it worked great! :D

However, when I pulled the instrument cluster surround off, I noticed there are lights near the headlight and wiper switches. AFAIK, these lights have never worked on my car.

I looked online and found a pic of the lights I'm talking about (circled in red):

I'll double-check the defroster light after work today, but I know the headlight and wiper lights don't work on my car (I assume they turn on then the dash lights are turned on). I find it funny that both of these are out, but I guess it's possible they both need bulbs replaced. I was just wondering if there is a fuse or something that might be the issue here.

Thanks! :)

Every interior light in the dash is on one circuit, so if the circuit was bad then they would all be out. They all run off the 15A tail fuse.

There are two tiny plugs that go to each little light, so check that those get power, and if they do then the bulbs are bad. If not then you need to get the wiring diagram and trace further down the circuit for problems.
Good luck. :)

Thanks Grant!

I (luckily) haven't had any electrical issues with the car, so I'm guessing the bulbs are bad.

Just my luck, because I just had the cluster surround off :P

In a few minutes I'll be able to check if the defroster light works on my car too; hopefully that's OK.

I might also be posting another electrical question... stay tuned! (jk) :P

My dash lights work fine, but my headlight and wiper indicator lights also don't work. I've tried every small bulb from o'reilly's that looked like it might work. I've been able to get them to light up briefly a few times by pressing a bulb in the socket with my finger (when I say briefly I mean about 1 second). It seems like none of the bulbs fully seat. If anybody knows the correct size please post up.

I've had some luck with T5 led bulbs from eBay for the headlight and wiper indicator lights. Not sure about the defroster switch bulb since I haven't changed that yet. Toyota still has the bulbs in stock if you wanna go that route ($$).

90981-11018 (headlight and wiper lights)
84999-10110 (defrost light)

Yea like MeetThePete said, Toyota has the bulbs. I also couldn't find them anywhere else; they're a very specific size. I remember they weren't too pricey even from Toyota.

You can also replace w. all LED, gives you the option of changing colors and draws less power

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Luckily the light in my defroster switch is ok (I checked last night).

I'll definitely see if I can find a solution aside from going through Toyota; I don't have *that* kind of $ :P

Thanks!

I just looked up the part number and they're about $3/each.

$3 each? I think I can splurge that :)

I Googled the 1st part # and found a post on the Club Lexus Forums saying a Philips #74 bulb would also work... tempted to see if I can fine one cheap locally first.

But thank you all for the info! :D I'm gonna stick with traditional bulbs for now, but maybe swap to LEDs in the future (really like the OEM green lights for some reason :P)
