Using eibach ers springs on stock spring perch
Using eibach ers springs on stock spring perch
Basically I would like to know if I can use eibach's coilover ers springs on stock rear spring perch (like oem, trd, swift). Will this have any adverse affects for daily driving as far as being safe to drive? And as far as spring ID it would be 2.5 in and length being 9in. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I just don't want to run high spring rates like 8kg in front and 6kg in rear because of it being daily driven.
Re: Using eibach ers springs on stock spring perch
I think it would be very unwise and dangerous to try and run small
diameter springs in the rear of an AE86. The rear perch is designed to
accommodate a full size large diameter spring, which has been proven
to be stable in operation.
A small diameter spring would not be held (seated) correctly, and would
be unstable and prone to buckling sideways. It is in the nature of the
coilover spring that it needs a strut or shock inside the spring to prevent
buckling.
At the very least, if you can't find a full size AE86 rear spring, search the
junkyard for a full size spring from a similar size car that you can use.
The spring needs to be long enough to remain captive at full droop, and
the diameter sound match the size of the spring perch on the rear axle.

Re: Using eibach ers springs on stock spring perch
Ok thanks Jon Dee, But do you think if I got the same diameter spring (that fits the spring perch) to run in the rear would it be ok? I would like to run a spring rate of 4kg in rear and 6kg in front. The front would be coil over/ short stroke agx conversion. The rear I would like to keep spring and shock (short stroke agx)if possible and not do coilover or have an height adjustable spring perches.
(Rear) The reason I'm asking is because the drop on swift's 6kg is too low and too hard for my application ( from what I've seen online) and trd race springs are discontinued for 4kg. I don't mind a moderately drop, but not anything past 2in. I would like to have a linear spring in that spring rate that would fit the rear spring perch.

Re: Using eibach ers springs on stock spring perch
The "510 method" is what the Datsun 510 crowd used to do. Basically you cut a hole in the rearend perch that is large enough for a coilover sleeve to slide into and then install the spring on the coilover. It would be a good idea to use a steel coilover sleeve and weld it to the rearend perch to keep things in place, to address jondee's point.
Re: Using eibach ers springs on stock spring perch
I've read about that as well, but I just want a spring I can just put in the stock spring perch like trd springs or swift in 4kg without any modification or extra work aside from replacing worn spring isolators.

Get in touch with these guys...
http://www.ajps.com.au/parts/spring_seat.php
They should be able to supply you with 4kg rear springs.

Re: Using eibach ers springs on stock spring perch
thanks guys, sorry haven't been on since then. it was a question I had been wondering about for those like myself who don't want to run 8kg,6kg right off the bat and maybe ease into lower spring rates before making a huge jump and not liking it. For now I plan on doing a beginners move by buying oem rubber bushings, megan lowering springs, whiteline panhard, kyb agx shocks, and tube spacers. Hopefully I like it. By the way jondee/got zoom I've read almost every post having to do with suspension setups written by you or you helping someone else, and I have to say you guys are a big help in that department.
one more quick question, on spring length regarding the 8kg,6kg combo how do you determine the spring length to go with? and what's the traditional length regarding both front and rear in a coilover setup such as ground control.
once again thank you guys
