Anyone know of an AE86 specialist (NorCal)

Postby ToraAE86 » Tue Jan 06, 2015 9:36 am

Hi,
Does anyone know of an AE86 "specialist" or mechanic that specializes in AE86's around the NorCal (SF, SJ, East Bay) area?

Thank you,
Tora

What seem to be the problem? I am not from the USA but I might be able to point you into the right direction to diagnose an issue.

Thanks for the offer! I really appreciate it!

Basically after the car rests over night, everything is just fine. I will start it up, drive any distance and it will be fine. But after the car's been on for a good amount of time consistently (like 30 minutes or more) that's when I will observe the problem.
If I were to make a quick stop for example to fill up on gas and hit the road again, mid way through, the power will seem to cut off. no matter what gear I'm in, the car will bog and the RPM will sink down to 2K, applying the throttle will make it seem like the car is sputtering, like a misfiring issue. I've down shifted to see if I can get over the 2K rpm hump but, no matter what gear it is, it will produce the same sputtering/misfiring type response. When the overall speed is low enough (20-25 mph) the car will completely shut off. I've been lucky enough to make my way over to the shoulder safely so far.

Immediate things that I have noticed are that the battery meter that I have in my engine bay will show 11.8-12.2
When I let it sit for maybe 15-20 minutes, the battery meter will raise to 12.6 and that's usually some indication to when I should try to start the car up again. If I can get the car to start and continue to drive consistently, then it seems to be fine. Any time I approach traffic or something that will slow me down then I face the potential for the same problem (however, this isn't the case always). If I start the car up and begin driving, sometimes I can see the RPM drop from 1-1.5K down to 0.5K, then I worry a bit. Sometimes feeding it revs will kick it back up over 1K and I might be okay. Sometimes the revving doesn't help and the engine will cut off again.

Distributor cap looks fine. Light oil build up around the spark plugs (condition of spark plugs are okay), but I have not seen any external leaks, so it might be internal (intake gasket, perhaps?). Spark plug wires seem to be okay, however I do question the 3rd spark plug wire's connection (it seems a tiny bit more elevated than the others when connected).

No radiator leaks.

Two days ago, I drove it from Southern California to Northern California (415 miles). And this issue occurred about 6 times. It took me 11 hours with the stops and checks etc. when the most it should have taken me was 7-7.5 hours.

I know I need to run a compression test, that's why I was searching for someone local to the Northern California area that I could trust.

Thank you for the time and consideration.

Thanks Max!
Please let me know what your thoughts are based off of my essay above. I know you're heading down south soon, so maybe when you get back we can get in touch and I can get that Nardi Horn button from you as well.

Thanks,
Tora

I run a family owned shop in Pleasanton CA. We would charge you $90 bucks for a diagnostic, if you choose to do the repair work (an estimate will be provided to you once the diagnostic is completed) the diagnostic fee will go towards the repair work. If we can't find out what's wrong, no charge.

older cars tend to take longer to work on, with your issues i'd like to keep it for a couple days to look through everything.
