Improving Suspension and Handling

Postby Carrera » Wed Oct 29, 2014 7:43 am

Hi Forum,

I bought my first AE 86 this week ,
The car will be used as a daily driver and a will be tracked once in a while.

I want to Upgrade my suspension , and make the car handle as good as possible , wihtout getting to the point is unusable in the street.

Can you guys recommend websites and parts that will help me get to my objective ?

Thank You !

"Unusable on the street" is very subjective. It depends on what you are used to and how well your municipality maintains their roads. Personally I am running 8k/6k coilovers on the street and wouldn't have it any other way. Many people don't think that setup is streetable. It's definitely harsher than other suspensions, but I like the feel of the road. Rims/tires also make a difference. When I ran 13s with the coilovers it was a relatively comfortable ride. I went over to 14s and I definitely feel more response from the road. I personally wouldn't do 15s just because I know that it would become way too harsh for my liking and with as many potholes as I go over, I would bust the bead in no time.

I am running Ventura springs (butter soft compared to 8/6kg's) and TRD dampers and love it + 15" wheels. The dampers are adjustable in the rear which you can use to adjust the balance of the car. 1 for street driving, 8 for drift and 4-6 for track. I have been to the Nurburgring 3 times with this setup and it works flawlessly. The 8/6 is a pure track/drift setup and will kill you on the road - I tried 8/6 TRD spring for a very short time.

Indeed, same boat here. One has to be pretty hard core to tolerate on the road - having to creep over every bump, dip, etc. and planning routes to completely avoid speed bumps. Less than decent roads can be unbearable.

Pick up Staniforth's "Competition Car Suspension".
