Help on a couple things, please

Postby InfernoAE86 » Tue Jun 24, 2014 12:58 pm

Hello, everyone. I'm doing a GTS swap on my 86 sr5 coupe, and i've been sourcing parts individually, as a donor GTS is damn near impossible to find in MI. I've got the engine and trans ALMOST ready to drop in the chassis, but I have run into a couple issues:
Firstly, I've tried facing the T-Stat housing both directions, and neither one will seem to clear the alternator. Is this a case of wrong alternator? Wrong coolant neck? Wrong radiator hose? (The radiator hose I bought is Gates #21065)

Secondly, (I don't have any pictures of this), I had the synchros in my T50 replaced, and while it was apart, I was playing around with the speedo gear, ensuring I had the proper GTS one, and not an SR5. I noticed that when I have the trans in gear (on the bench), and spin the input shaft, therefore the output shaft, the speedo gear is not turning. I looked in the speedo hole, and the output shaft worm gear seems to be possibly off centered or something, however it is between two clips, as it should be. Any ideas why my gears are apparently not meshing? or is it spinning so slowly I can't notice it turning?

Top pic looks about right. The alternator sits well out towards the end
of its adjustment with the stock belt
. The hose starts out more or less
horizontal over the top of the alternator, then turns down and forward
to the bottom rad connection. There is about one finger clearance from
the hump in the alt casting, or two fingers clearance from the pressed
metal end shield.

Cheers... jondee86

Thanks, dude. I'll have a look tonight, but i'm 99% sure it won't fit. This is the 4AC coolant neck, which "Goldberg's Cooling Guide" said would work. But it doesn't seem to, even with the alternator all the way out.

Yeah... I think that is the problem. The 4AGE neck sticks out pretty much
horizontal, while your one is sloping down. Cut and weld as a last resort ?

Holy difference, Batman!
Not my pic, but it shows clearly what you're talking about:

When i bought my hatchback i had the same issue. Last owner got a hose to fit, but it in the end is was the wrong neck. Dunno where it came from, but exactly same angle as the picture. Found someone on club4ag and got a gts water neck and good to go! Good luck
