Moving to Los Angeles soon and WTF is smog?

I have an 1985 ae86. All the pollution controls have been removed. How much trouble am I in for? Also will I need factory exhaust too?

All pollution controls will need to be installed and properly functioning as well as they can tell. It will need to pass visual inspection and the sniffer test.
Hopefully others with more detailed knowledge will be able to help more but from what I know. I believe the header needs to be stock. I also believe some people have gotten through with the stock 20v mani. I believe the Cat has to be stock or equivalent and I believe any intake or exhaust components that aren't stock need to be CARB certified.

Additionally, you'll need to take the car to a DMV office and have a safety inspection done, since it's an out-of-state car. They will verify that all of the lights work, there is one seatbelt per seat (if the seats are removed, you'll need to reinstall them, along with the seatbelts,) and they will verify the odometer and VIN.

This is not going to be fun at all. I don't have any of the polution control systems. It does have a Cat and O2 but that is it. I need to start sourcing parts then.
