15mph smog fail

Postby BlackStar » Sat Mar 23, 2013 8:18 pm

Yup, still working on getting my car to pass smog. My hook up fell through. Regardless, I have all emissions equipment on my car, and they are functioning. My car even passes the 25mph test with ease. The 15mph test, not so much. New catalytic converter, plugs, EGR system, wires, oil. Only thing I can think of is that the car hasn't been driven enough(To warm up/break in the cat, both times i smogged I had to wait for a good amount of time). I don't have a TOP(and I am out of them at this point). My options to me are either, to have a shop do a carburetor tune(I'm not sure if it was tuned after being rebuilt) or find another hook up.

However, what else should i check? Anything I could adjust at home? I am new to carburetor, so I would be willing to have a professional take care of it so it will pass legally.

HC MAX134, GP 308 My car: 325

CO: MAX (ppm)0.58, GP 2.32, My car:1.97

NO (ppm) Max 847, GP 2070, My car 28 (OK)

Meaures CO2:13.48
O2:0.51

25mph test: (where i did fine)

HC(ppm) MAX 76, GP 258 My car 26

CO MAX 0.49, GP 2.21, My car 0.03

NO(ppm) Max 786, GP 1870, My car 522

I took the print out to another shop, and they said it was the carburetor, and that it needs a rebuild and a tune. Again. Time to take it off and send it in. I will also give a copy of the printout so they can adjust it correctly to pass smog. I may get another opinion from a shop that is more used to older cars too.

Have you checked your timing or if your ignition components are working correctly?

Stating what kind of car/engine it is will help.

I had the same exact issue just last week. Thankfully my issue was merely changing the plugs... Also make sure that w the new plugs u have them gapped correctly. Looks like uve covered everything n it could come down to something as simple as that when it cones to stupid smog. Gl

I actually have sent of my carb to be looked over, appratnly the air/ful screw was messed with by the smog tech to try to make ti pass. It obviously didnt work. I have having the carb re-tuned so it will have a better chance at passing emissions. Furthermore, I found out that give the car a good long drive before testing greatly increases the odd. I hadn't done that in previous attempts due to a number of repairs that needed to be done to the car to make it more road worthy(they are almost complete though.) I figure the retune, fresh fluids, a good drive out and maybe a visit to another smog shop will get me to pass. The earlier mentioned shop had a 1 hour wait, which would have killed my chances regardless. Get the car tested hot will help me out.
