Trying to setup a diff cooler
Trying to setup a diff cooler
I'm trying to setup a diff cooler on my ae86. Has anyone else set one up? I know I need a cooler, pump, and lines. But where is there space to setup the cooler in the rear, or if you have a setup on your car how did you do it. Just looking for some advise before I start this little project.
Re: Trying to setup a diff cooler
Why are you doing a diff cooler? More importantly why is your diff getting that hot?
Re: Trying to setup a diff cooler
Doing a diff cooler cause i've been through 3 ring and pinions now and only maybe 6-8 events. The diff is getting crazy hot during these events. The car isn't making crazy amounts of horse power or torque but it's making a lot more than the old 4ag used too. That is the reason i want to do a diff cooler setup.

Check in the TRD Bible for the AE86 and you can see what they did. You should be able to find it by searching on google. It seems to use the ring gear rotation to pump the gear oil through the cooler, since there is no actual pump.

That would be really cool if the ring gear could provide enough circulation without having to use a pump.
Drain plug and fill plug thread size is m18x1.5 BTW.

Re: Trying to setup a diff cooler
I've ran no diff cooler for over 7 years now, with R-compound and an aggressively shimmed TRD LSD. Diff coolers are pretty awesome, but I don't think they're necessary in all but extreme cases.
Are you using a solid pinion spacer?

Yes solid pinion spacer, and a 4.77, R comps, Tomei LSD. The diff is just getting cooked. That's why i've been thinking of a diff cooler.
Re: Trying to setup a diff cooler
What kind of gear oil are you using?
A few images ive found. Placement of the oil cooler is crucial, you might have to run adequate ducts

Have you looked into placing a baffle plate in the rear member? Might be a simpler and more cost effective solution..

The simplest is just increasing the rear fluid capacity
