Re: 2013 f20 86 build round 2
finally made it up to ft worth/autocomp this past weekend (sorry dallas/ftworth bros spent the whole time working)
finished getting every last bit of sound deadaning out
chopped the front wheel wells out
along with the spare tire well
this is what she weighs in the current state should have the cage going in soon then its on to rear suspension design
also bought this thing to tow with but i'll start a new thread somewhere else

Autocomp TIG welding awesomeness
bent up the front HALO bar started notching it
pulled the green car in for temporary destruction
rolled here out back
mocked motor up in the new car
started cutting for shifter clearance
Re: 2013 f20 86 build round 2
rolled her out side
cut out tunnel for transmission clearance since I can no longer run subframe spacers
Honda rue made me a fancy map sensor delete and one for the brake master
motor back in
main hoop all finished
went to pull some more stuff and found a odd motor swap
Re: 2013 f20 86 build round 2
started beating inner fender for wheel clerance
motor all cleaned up
trans final cut
welding magic
halo bar fitting
more welding
tilted foward for welding the tops
bent front down bars
Re: 2013 f20 86 build round 2
I didn't notice any subframe spacers. Were you able to avoid using them by cutting the trans tunnel for clearance?

exactly... I was running the subframe spacers on the green car but can't run them on the new car because of the rules. Had to cut the trans tunnel out for clearance and I will probably have to cut a small hole in the hood to clear the end of the valve cover
Re: 2013 f20 86 build round 2
What was wrong with the green car? It looks so sad outside all alone.

Oh yes I think I've heard of that. One of 2013's new rules. I think I read it in one of DMACs ae86 read ups on speed hunter he enforced his tunnel real well.
Great build!!!!
Re: 2013 f20 86 build round 2

Nice progress! This thread makes me feel like I'm taking short cuts on my F22c build!
Also, Can you post some details of how you did / are going to do the drive shaft?

Great build! All the pics are great; thanks for taking the time to upload and comment on them
Just out of curiosity, the pieces that were cut off the car... they weren't scrapped right? I hope not; they are perfectly straight

Re: 2013 f20 86 build round 2
So i am going to jump ahead i little bit the last weekend after the last picture in this thread was total chaos with almost no sleep to finish the car in time for long beach. At one point i worked for 40 hrs. straight through only stopping for food and water. So needless to say I don't have a lot of pictures of us finishing the car lol. We ended up finishing the car and putting it on the trailer at 8:30 am on Wednesday and we had to be in long beach at 10 am on Thursday... it was a pretty interesting drive without a whole lot of stops.
We ended up pulling up to the track at around 10:30 am and unloaded the car and headed to tech. Formula D tech is pretty in depth so i was nervous about passing but in the end the only thing we had to add was a driveshaft loop.
We got it installed and made it official. After finishing a few things up that we didn't have time to finish in Texas we headed to the hotel for the night. The next morning started with a drivers meeting explaining all the things the judges would be looking for. I had never driven the new car so i wasn’t sure what to expect heading into the one and only practice session.
On my first run in practice I decided to go for it on the straight knowing we would only get a few runs before qualifying. The car felt good in first and second but when i shifted to third I had a massive boost spike in the 35-40 psi range. Turns out the wastgate/boost controller had malfunctioned causing the spick. I headed back to pit road to fix the problem but the damage had already been done. With the help of vene we got the wastegate working again but the car started overheating. I started to worry that we had blown the head gasket but headed back to grid to try to make some runs anyway. My second run the car was way down on power and it started smoking slightly the run wasn’t that great as i was still trying to figure out the track. My third and final practice lap all the problems became much worse the engine dumped smoke throughout the entire run, started overheating again, and was even more down on power. We checked the oil level on pit road and we had burned an entire quart in one run. After much debate I decided to retire from the event and save what was left of the engine. It was a tough break after all the work we put in to make the event but it was the best decision in the end.

Top notch build! Really quality work on the whole car. Bummer about the cracked cylinder!
