Special Feel! Hachi Roku Slide Machine

Postby oralepinky » Sun Apr 20, 2014 10:14 pm

Looking to use this thread as a reference on the build/growth of the 86 and to be open to any and all suggestions/opinions.

My old KA-T25 hatch
Image

Sold that then, picked up a '90 LS400 that I daily'd till I sold then moved to Tampa, FL from Connecticut last Fall.
After sharing the bus for a few months with the local mix of broke people, multiple DUI offenders and the homeless,
I was able to swoop up a super clean '97 DC2 with quite a few mods for only a 1k$. The plan was to find an S-chassis to trade with but instead I found this almost mint 130k miles '85 SR5.

After seeing the ad through a local Honda facebook group, I immediately left after work to check it out. Went home, grabbed my title, came back, threw on my bubble knob and mirror, and drove that bitch home.
Received 150$ on top and kept my JapanDyno wheel, QR, Broadway mirror, dildo bubble and Bosozoku teddy bear shift knobs and Squash scented Air Spencer of course lol
Absolute zero frame/chassis rust with a few minor dents from the previous owner's Thule rack, a small fender bender to the front driver's side causing some minor hood damage/misalignment, cracked driver side taillight(different incident), and nuts n' bolts in place of a small spoiler that was once there.

Too be honest, I'm not entirely sure on how I want to start the build, just super excited to be able to drive a chassis I've admired since before the growth of ball hair.

Suspension
----------------
-Currently on cut springs and blown shocks
-Looking at https://technotoytuning.com/toyota/ae86 , when money's right I'll pull the trigger on the right stuff
-passenger inner tie rod was fxcked so I ordered 2 for 17$ and swapped it
-outer tie rods also fxcked, that will be taken care of next, not sure if I'll go with OEM or straight to something aftermarket.
-Panhard / lateral bar will be after that
https://technotoytuning.com/toyota/ae86/panhard-lateral-bar-ae86-corolla
Grabbed this info on a DIY Panhard/lateral bar from marley4us's build thread, thank you!
2458K182 Ball Joint Rod End 3/4"-16 Lh (you just need one of these) $17.36 each Mcmaster.com
2458K181 Ball Joint Rod End 3/4"-16 Rh (you see a trend starting ) $17.36 each Mcmaster.com
6381K121 Bronze 3/4"-1/2" bushing (you'll just need one) $1.64 each Mcmaster.com
91034134-27 (27")ALUM TUBE FOR 3/4" HEIMS (you'll need just one) $14.95 each Speedwaymotors.com
**These are your choice since it's just stuff you can get at your local hardware store and probably be cheaper but I'll list it up anyways
1756047-LH JAM NUTS 3/4", STEEL 6/PACK (you just need one per side) $3.95 Speedwaymotors.com
1756047-RH JAM NUTS 3/4", STEEL 6/PACK (ditto^^) $3.95 Speedwaymotors.com
-Then the few bushings with poly that are not replaced when upgrading arms
-Will be switching too manual steering, probably going with a AW11 replacement, which will require a MK3 supra intermediate shaft

Interior
----------
-Driver seat is fxcked
-pass. seat on its way
-Maybe a set from a MK3 Supra or AW11
-Bride reps?
-Corbeau?
-idfk but the added pillow ain't doin' it, my back KILLS.

Engine/Power
-------------------
-Obviously "the little 4AC that can't" wont hold up for many events and since it's a daily, not a very good idea either. I've done a little reading (need plenty more) and met a few Toyota guys that have suggested my best bang for the buck would be the 3TC motor from the TE72 and Corona's.
http://www.dorikaze.net/showthread.php?22829-HOW-TO-Swap-3tc-into-AE86
-4AG is just too expensive/PITA to get into if you don't already have one or poor AF. (different fuel tank, upper/lower/rear harnesses, etc)

Trans
--------
-replacement Trans mount soon(it's not horrible but seems like the original), probably after the outer tie rods are done
-Weld the diff more than likely, maybe a 2-way in the far future but broke *****s don't have that kind of cheese
-B&M short throw, loved the old one I had in the hatch that I picked up from Eric (Vqboodah) on the cheap, my favorite combo with the bubble knob.

Wheels
----------
-receiving Gold Enkei 92's in 15x8 ET25 from a homie
should be mounted by the end of April/beginning of May
-32mm spacers
-he also hooked me up with two 205/50 Falken Azenis RT615k's, so just need to order two more

Style
-------
-No idea, just some basketballs under the fenders until I figure it out
-Levin front if I can come across one for cheap

For some reason I can't take my eyes off that pic :)

Looks great! :D

For the seats I've heard of guys using Celica / MR2 / Supra seats. Anything can be done, especially if you can modify / weld up new rails.

The 3TC sounds like a good cost-effective idea. The motor mount description in the link you provided is the best option IMO.

As far as a transmission, if you Google around I think there's a way to put a W58 behind a 3TC with an OEM Toyota bellhousing; how sure how rare it is though.

Since you mentioned a Levin conversion, personally I like Zenki (1984 & 1985) AE86s with the Trueno front end and Kouki (1986 & 1987) models with Levin front ends. That being said, I like both front ends on both models :P Guess it really boils down to price.

Finally, I don't think you mentioned this, but with the more powerful motor you might want to change out the rear end. A GTS one would probably work, but depending on how much power the 3TC will make you could also go MK1 Celica-Supra. I think those are the most common options for LSD + factory rear disc brakes.

Anyway, the car looks good and good luck with it! :)

It's too bad the T50 isn't strong enough, love the ratio

Same here, I think they all can look good in their own respect.

Coming from the S-chassis world, I mentioned going with a welded at first and didn't think of the drum brakes. Any thoughts on how long those can last from the stress of locking them up at events?

Whether the T50 is "strong enough" or not really depends on how much power your engine is putting out and what you use the car for. Stock 3TC + T50 as a daily driver would probably be fine. But for drifting, probably not.

If you like the T50 ratios (I do too) you could go with a W55 transmission instead. It's stronger, and the gear ratios are almost the same. I think a W55 would bolt up with the same bellhousing as a W58; not 100% sure on that though.

T50

First Gear: 3.587:1
Second Gear: 2.022:1
Third Gear: 1.384:1
Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
Fifth Gear: 0.861:1

W55

First Gear: 3.566:1
Second Gear: 2.056:1
Third Gear: 1.384:1
Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
Fifth Gear: 0.85:1

No idea. I just DD my car, so I'm not sure what kind of abuse it can take. Other members on here have more info than I do, and could probably give you more info on what setups you'd need for drifting and such :)
