From Michigan with Love

Postby 32koday_mg.86 » Wed Jun 25, 2025 11:02 pm

Hey guys. Long time lurker here, and thought I'd make a thread about my 86.

Little introduction about myself, I'm Kodai, and I was originally born in Yokohama Japan, now living in Michigan, USA. My grandfather worked at the Kanto-Higashi Fuji facility of Kanto Auto Works, a subsidiary of Toyota that was responsible for developing and manufacturing some of the most well known Toyotas, such as the Cresta/Chaser/Mark II/Cressida (Many will know them as a "JZX") , the Toyota Century, and of course the AE86. Hearing his stories about the time when he worked there, paired with my parents' love for Toyotas and European rallying made me intrigued about AE86s more and more, paired with peer pressure from my friends to watch Initial D. I recall surfing craigslist in middle school looking for corollas, and I still wake up in cold sweat sometimes about all of the deals I "missed out" on.

Fast forward to my freshman year in high school circa 2021, me and my dad finally got an AE86.

It was honestly super disappointing when it first came. It was missing so much parts, it didn't actually drive like the seller claimed, it was disgusting, and not a single panel was straight. But alas, here is my new to me, 1986 Toyota Corolla SR5.

On the bright side though, it did have a 20v 4AG, albeit missing almost everything except for the engine.

But after lots of inspiration from Club4AG, I was eager to get into it!
The car came from Texas, and seems to have lived a fraction of its life in Mexico, as evident by the mexican license plate on the listing photo, the lack of rust (or so I thought), and mexican pesos under the carpet.
For the first 6 months of ownership, I was not concerned about the condition or the visuals of the car, I strictly wanted to function and drive down the road at a minimum. We put in a new clutch, found out the pilot bearing was not present, redid the clutch hydraulic system, put in AW11 MR2 seats (ugly, but anything was miles better than what was in there) fixed the rust under the windshield and replaced the glass, and replaced those god ugly 15x9 American racing wheels with some more modest, 15x7 panasports with new tires.

That's all it needed to be able to move under its own power. But to get it roadworthy, I ended up fixing some loose ends on the engine harness, putting new inner and outer tie rods, a new turn signal stalk, lights, and some fluids. Oh, and of course, a 360mm Nardi Classic!

I then got the headlights and running lights to work from a toggle switch, and it was ready for its maiden voyage.

I drove this car around with my dad and friends in this state for a couple months, going to car meets and such.

The ignition system eventually ended up quitting, and the car was put away for the cold Michigan winter, and a refresh along the way.

Welcome on board :o You look to be doing an excellent job on the refresh. I rarely see an AE86 in Michigan, let alone three at a time. Good luck on the build.

Welcome to the board!
Looks like you're doing a great job refreshing the car. It's overwhelming at the start, but just keep a TODO list and hopefully you will slowly be checking things off faster than the list is growing.

Starting with a 20v gives you a lot of potential for the future if the wiring and swap is all sorted out. Have fun, and keep it away from the road salt! :P

Thanks guys for the kind words!

Now comes 2022, I would've been a sophomore in high school. The winters here in Michigan are brutal, so no driving, and barely any wrenching as it gets -20°c below freezing here. But I collected a ton of parts over that period of time.

I managed to snag a AW11 MR2 rack from the local pick a part for $60.
Image
Got a Fujitsubo Legalis R for my birthday and Christmas combined (December birthday things!)

And thanks to the help of Craig, (@zenki.red) I was able to make my own wiring harness for the 20v to suit my car, along with a fresh 6spd blacktop ECU from a friend off instagram!

I also redid the entire cooling system with a koyorad and a SQ engineering water relocation kit (typical20v stuff), finally getting rid of the ebay civic radiator, and having a thermostat.
I also painted the valve cover and header, installed the new wiring, touched up the bay, did a lot of wire management, 3D printed some velocity stacks thanks to some help from my old high school shop and design class teachers (thanks Mr. Scavo and Jr. Scavo!) and did a front end reseal and new timing belt. I also redid the fuel lines to accommodate for the EFI.

Inside, I got a new gauge cluster in (canadian market GTS zenki cluster) thanks to the help of Kevin Yan @yanimator86, finally a OEM headlight switch from the hiatt brothers @timmy_hiatt and @joehiatt, personal steering hub and combination switch assy from @Karamgrewal, and cluster surround trim from @broldfield! The nardi horn button was from my good friend Giangi (@ggdrift04) from italy!

By the time spring time rolled around, my car finally felt ok enough to be seen in. The interior was comfortable for once, and presentable. Quick before/after! (note the A70 supra radio I found in the junkyard, faced down in a puddle! worked like a charm.) Shift boot courtesey of Craig @zenki.red again, and the shift knob is one off of a RN44 pickup!

Some exterior changes included a Zenki SR5 bumper cover and grille (old one was mangled) kouki headlight eyelids (really wanted zenki ATT but couldn't find any) Zenki corner lights (traded with my JDM smoked koukis, yeah yeah its backwards, sue me lol) hundreds of hours hand polishing the car, and sometouch up paint here and there.

By this time I finally got to getting rid of my sketchy fuel cell (self tappered with 2 screws and ziptied in) to a reman tank with OEM hanger, MA70/ST185 OEM denso pump, and brand new straps.

installed some cusco RCAs,

Modified an Automatic Overdrive indicator light to turn on when VVTi engages in the stock 20v ECU,

and installed a replacement heater core (that ended up leaking again...)
