Junkyard score! Anybody else know about these?

Postby Me86Rob » Fri Aug 02, 2013 12:05 am

I've been looking to replace the SR5 rear end in my Corolla pretty much since the idea of the M series swap was born. After looking and waiting for something reasonable, I decided on getting a Toyota Van rear end. 7.5" but still 4 lug. Only downside is they are leafspring set ups, so you have to add 4 link perches to them. Well a van showed up in my local Pull-A-Part. Went up there to pull the rear end, and it was a 4 link van! I've never seen this. Both of the vans we have at the shop are leafsping, same years and everything. Anybody else seen/utilized this set up?

I know about them. Was going to be a project for me, but time and money do not allow at the moment. Right now it's just a project on paper that i've been working on for maybe just a few months. Waiting for a sale on rear ends at PNP or the next 50% sale.

what is the measurement on the case? or from drum to drum? I figure it's pretty close to the GTS if not just a little longer.

Here are my observations:

One could transfer the SR5 brackets with the cut and weld method. Since that's the case, even the rear end that uses the leaf packs is an option. The rear drum is the only deterrent, and perhaps just a small concession considering it's an upgrade to a 7.5" ring and pinion (and opens up the possibilities for many final drives and LSDs). if one could figure out how to convert to discs and be able to retain the parking brake, that would make it a more enticing option, but the bolt pattern on the GTS backing plate is not the same as the bolt pattern on the Van's drum. should be reasonably simple for one who understands how to make brackets. Another observation I made is that the bolt pattern on the 3rd member flange is not always the same. sometimes it's 4 12mm nuts and bolts, sometimes it's 14mm nuts and bolts. One should take note of that so they don't end up with a driveshaft that doesn't match.
