The best AE86 cup holder. Ever.

I've solved the AE86 cup holder problem once and for all. Air-vent mounted 100-yen store "JDM" cup holders? Maybe if you're holding a Dixie cup, tofu boy.

Inspired by the Toyota Sienna's seat-mounted cup-holders, I have long-sought a location to mount a flip-down beverage holster. Sure, you can screw through the carpet, but doesn't that look a bit tacky? Into the dash? NO! The stereo bezel? Only if you want it to fail horribly on you.

And then it hit me: Why do my (virtually nonexistent) rear passengers need an ashtray? I've only had one person smoke in my backseat in college, and she was not a pleasant person. So I removed the old ashtray holster and bezel and installed this $6 cup holder from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000Q86IQQ/ref ... hrb1NKESRD

BEHOLD:

Aluminum screw backing plate because I am paraniod that I'll spill on my fancy new carpet.

The way it sits on the transmission hump supports heavier drinks.

I'm still on the lookout for Siennas in junkyards to steal their cup holders. (Toyota wants something like $40 for them new.) For now, this is perfect. I even cut up a PBR coaster and fit it inside the lid because I am such a hipster.

 That's a nifty idea, but I wouldn't want to drill holds on my center console like that...

The beauty of the aluminum backing plate is that you don't have to drill any holes if you don't want to. With mine, I decided to drill three at the top, just to make sure drinks stay secure. The other three screws go through the hole where the ash tray used to be. You could just as easily do the three on the bottom and two in the middle and drill no holes at the top. Actually, that might be easier than what I did... getting the holes I drilled in the plastic to line up with the holes I drilled in the backing plate was harder than I thought it would be.

I find the OEM ashtray nasty, nonfunctional and embarrassingly easy to lose in the back, so I threw away the bezel and holster.

Also, you'll never notice the holes unless you decide to uninstall the GREATEST CUP HOLDER IN THE HISTORY OF THIS CAR.

You don't have to drill holes. That's why the good lord invented velcro, and structural double-sided tape.

But with the 1986 models, Toyota DID offer a cup holder in these cars. It is a plastic insert that pops into that little plastic hatch in the center console, right in front of the ashtray. Great way to hit your drink with your elbow when you shift, but 100% OEM. If you really want to put a cupholder by your elbow, might as well make it an OEM cupholder.

It sits a bit too far back for me to hit it with my elbow. Not the best placement for drinking while driving, but i dont do that anyways. (I use it to hold drinks from the drive-through until I get where I'm going.) The OEM holder is alright as long as you don't use the console for anything else, I guess.

Best cup holder I found is a travel mug from Cumberland Farms. One of those wide-bottom plastic coffee mugs. Once I pulled the heater ducts out of the floor, I found that I could just put the travel cup on the floor between my legs. Easy to reach, and it can only spill on the floor. The trick is pulling out those damned vent snakes, so there's a flat floor again.

I'd definitely get a big mug for long trips! I just put in new silver-blue carpet (blue two-tone in and out) and hardcore carpet cleaned my seats, so I'm paranoid about spilling anything.

Half of my reason for this post was to provoke people who think their cup holders are better into sharing ideas.

'hardcore carpet cleaned my seats'
Buy a spray can or pump spray of ScotchGuard. Real 3M ScotchGuard. While the seats are clean, SOAK 'EM. Run the heater for an hour to dry them out. repeat the enxt day with whatever is left in the bottle. They'll be a little stiff for a few days, but they stay nice and clean that way.

I'm going to do it to my entire interior, at least everything carpeted or cloth.

This makes me think of an old ex marine drill instructor coworker of mine. He used to scotchguard his uniform to yell at the recruits in the showers. So mean, even the rain dont touch him.. LOL

I lol'd at the Marine. My ultimate cuoholder is a different car to carry my cups. 100% OEM 97 Camry lol.

Nicely done Tora! :D
Location is not an issue for me..I reach for stuff on the back seats when I come to red lights.. This is a good spot for a cup holder. like how its out of the way. (plus don't need anymore broken air vents :( )
I'd use machine screws and nylon locknuts for more secure fit though

I've used this industrial stuff in the house and on the car. Will hold a brick to a wall! ..Even works on porous surfaces..

So for a goof, you could jack up someone's car, one tire at a time, and velcro it down to the spot? <VBG>

stiff arse suspension and drinks+cupholders, mounted anywhere, don't mix..
Guess you get to..

I really like that drawer-style holder, but I could never do without my radio. I think the big ashtray would make a nice, solid mount for a cup holder.

Just received my cupholder, the Navy blue is so dark I thought they had shipped me black, was hoping for a better match but oh well. I will update here when I have had it installed a while. I might have to size down Slurpee's by one size!

ive used a walmart, carbon fiber bicycle drink holder, and mounted it side by side on the passenger side of the center console. couldnt really beat it, both on clearance for $5, and never spilt a drink, even while sliding......riding on 13's, slammed on bc coilovers. probably a bit uncomfortable for the passenger....but i dont drive over there.

besides guys, obviously were doing it wrong if we need cup holders.......

Way better than an ash tray for the rear passengers! It's totally accessible from my driving position, and my elbow doesn't hit it. It won't work for huge drinks, and it's difficult to reach while driving, but I don't really want to encourage myself to have drinks in the car. I've picked up coffee with it a couple of times and haven't had any spills yet. Uncut stock springs, Tokiko blues, Prothane bushings.
