* Finding a Mint Condition ae86*
$15,000
Everything on this ae86 amazes you .

i was in the market of buying another ae86 and it seems that the Initial D tax is being apply to their sale , i was trying to get a good stock sr5 to work on as a project and the seller was selling it at $4,500 which i is over priced compare to another seller that is selling a gts for $4,500 but the condition of his ae86 was ok. which i think the gts was at reasonable price. and the sr5 wasn't.

*just my opinion*
not to bagg on any sellers. just look at what you realistically have.
Feel free to elaborate on this topic.

^^^amen bro^^^ these prices are getting out of hand haha...i was talking to a fellow mechanics(older man)about 86's cuz he had an sr5 parked at his shop and i told him how the chassis is sought after and is a collectible, especially the hatchs... the mechanic laughed, he said in the 90s junkyards were full of them especially the gts models, he mentioned many were junked because of bad trannys, blown headgaskets n various electrical issues...he didnt speak highly about the 86s at all, claiming the sr5 was a more realiable model...when i told him some people are paying 10k plus, he said that is crazy and thanks for the tip lol..

Before, the drift tax didn't bother me. I just kept remembering how much these were new, and when adjusted for inflation, a mint stock GTS would be somewhere around 24K.

However it's getting so ridiculous my anger has no place to vent (How many people want to listen to you talk about cars let alone japanese 90's car market fluctuation?).

The worst part was I hated the 86 in Initial D. I thought it was ugly and the 4age as sexy as it sounded was so under-powered it's not even funny.

Lately, as I've been burning through 90's cars trying to find "my own", I've noticed the 86 is the only one that really fits the bill:

I move around a lot, and the hatch has so much space to put all your sh**, even tires.

I hate big cars, that's why I never got another 240. Long as a black di** in a porno.

In terms of weight, I love lightweight cars; and the only car that comes close to the 86 is the Miata. The NA unfortunately is not conducive to a transient lifestyle (ask me how I know).

I've always loved 80's cars before 90's, but they take too much work or are not even possible to turn into competitive cars. The 86 is different, which brings me to my next point:

I like everything cars. The 86 can do everything. Rally specials, track, autocross, mountain runs, whatever you want.

Plus the GTS seats look cool as f***

However, the drift tax is ridiculous. So I just try to spend my life waiting until the hype dies down. Maybe in the following years when we can import more and more 90's cars under the 25-year rule, there will be a lot of chassis that have absolutely no hype and can be bought for next to nothing. Case in point is the AE92 GTS in Japan. They sell for next to nothing and come equipped with a supercharged 4AG and weigh 2.6K. Just an example of how hype makes cars god like.

I don't know, I probably sound stupid but w/e. Just tired of seeing people buy good chassis and swapping 2JZs in them so they can be straight line boring racers for padre so he can blow away competition on highway 9. That's not what this car was meant for. It's frustrating. Then again people can do what they want with the car they paid money for.

Guess that's AMURICA

hatch and sunroof prices will change these numbers significantly.
And, those sr5 prices look pretty high!

I think the prices going up is sort of a predictable progression, given the popularity and typical purpose of the car. Even "older man" mechanic says that all the GTS went to the junker waaaay back in his day, that plus fanboi dorifto destruction. Less used cheap stuff in circulation, makes for more stuff you gotta look all over the interwebz for and over pay for some old ratty used part thats the same as what you were hoping to replace. That or you pony up and go to the dealer. Either way owning and maintaining one of these things starts to become a real pain very quickly. I am in the middle of just trying to get mine decent for daily, and yeah its quite a bit more work than I was hoping for. Just about every major component/ system needs to be gone through and or replaced. Which I feel is the case with most of these cars, they are just old and need a bunch of time and money spent on them. So if someone took the time to try and do any of it right, they often feel like they went above and beyond scouring the ends of the earths to scrap together their little 86, and that usually makes them say "I know what I have", even though its a mismatched primer 80's corolla with a bunch of dirty parts on the side saying its 95% complete. It's messed up yeah, but just one of those things to where the supply got super small and the demand got unpredictably big.

It's like you know my life

But seriously man, you hit everything right on the head. I guess it's not all bad. I feel worse for the guys who love FDs. The community is full of people who aren't enthusiasts and non-op cars can easily sell for over 10K.

Thanks for the motivation brah ;)

And OP did a great job with the appraisal thread.

This reminds me why I no longer own Datsuns. People use to give me ice cold water to remove 510's off their driveways! Like I was doing them a favor, now.... I drive a KP61, people are damn too scared to take up on one of these due to the lack of support! which is perfect for me haha

This can be said about a lot of cars friend. To be honest what you describe sounds more like a wrx wagon or something.

LOL and don't worry about Takumi's car being under powered, it's just a cartoon. It's meant to be dramatic. It's like saying "Why is Krillin still even trying to attack? its obvious he's under powered compared to Freeza..." Its for entertainment purposes only. :D

Nah 714,

I had both a WRX and a 2.5RS at one point. They are great cars if you never want to work on them LOL. Those engines bring me no pleasure to mess with.

And Krillin is always in there cuz someone has to die haha.

And if anything, I think the OP should be stickied in the FS thread.

All those prices you posted are marginally high, it's still very possible to find hatches for 3-4k. Don't give anyone false hope, take this guy for example. http://club4ag.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=18182

This post is a joke...those prices are super inflated...you must be getting ready to sell your GT-S or something? Also, how do you figure in these prices? What facts, information do you have to support those outrageous prices? A SR5 is no where even close to being worth what you've stated...even if the SR5 had a F20 swap, full suspension, etc.. would maybe fetch 10K if the seller was lucky.

All you're doing by posting something like this is giving sellers false hope, and/or making a weak attempt to inflate AE prices. I don't know why but this post really bothered me...

At the end of the day here's the only fact about selling a car. It's only worth what someone will pay for it.

Agreed, lol posts like these come along every couple months. Usually due to frustration of buying or selling.

ae86714 wrote:Agreed, lol posts like these come along every couple months. Usually due to frustration of buying or selling.

They come here wanting to buy an ae86 for whatever reason (drifting, touge, video games, Initial D, Hotversion DVDs, etc.), complain about the prices for just a Corolla, buy one after the seller finally gives in to their low ball offer, complain about prices on parts and wheels by saying that they cost more than their cars. A few months or even weeks later, their cars are back in the cars FS section because they ran out of funds or ran out of will power to wrench. Many and many of them come and go. It has been a cycle for years.

I don't agree with the demand being high for these cars at all. I think the demand is just high for individual parts. I tried to sell my ITBd gts which was pretty clean inside and out fir 10k. I honestly would have let it go for 8k if someone would have offered. I didn't even get tire kickers. I literally got 1 offer for like 5k and a few stupid trade offers.

So I'm now in the process of parting the car out and have made over 15k and still have items for sale. I am surprised people don't see the value in complete cars. Honestly, I feel like I should look for cars to part out and make money but I don't want to get into what that could do to prices overall.

I feel like this applies to basically any early to mid 90's JDM chassis.

I like the post about the mech stating they used to be living in junkyards with minor problems. I heard the same for the s13s as well--people couldn't get rid of them. Then, at the time, To Fast too gay came out and changed a lot of things.

I agree the prices stated by the OP are high, but at least it's better than the white SR5 hatch on Cali CL that is selling for like 6 grand with severe body damage and does not currently run (can't find post :)

Just wait for the BRZ/FRS chassis to drop down in price. The scene will be all over them when they are affordable due to it's FR layout and how recent it is, so that people don't have to spend years restoring a car.

BTW, what's wrong with touge, drifting, video games, Initial D, and hot version? Sounds like a sweet friday night haha.

I don't mean high demand as in overall market, like compared to all other cars or something. I was more just poking fun at how people "want" these cars but as soon as they see how much work and $$ it takes, they start to make posts like these to try and spread what they think about the way the world should be. Yours was the blue Levin Coupe right? I live in OC Anaheim area, and I remember seeing it many years back around town. Sorry I didnt have the money, always loved seeing it around.

You're right though, more people want to try and build one than wanting to buy one that is already properly done. That being said... I might message you on some parts lol

Agree with both of you ..... Another thing to add is these guys buy the 86 thinking it's fast and a "race" car and they get spanked by there Mom's caravan, getting embarrassed.

Just makes me lol every time I see a stock SR-5 up for something stupid like $6k. Faded paint, torn interior, etc. I often wonder "hmmmm, what is my sr-5 coupe worth if this guy gets near that $ for it? $9k? $10k!?"

I remember when spending $2500 for a stock GT-S was marginally overpriced, in the sellers favor. Oh well.

Also, OP, those prices are waaaayyyyy over inflated. Just from my observations on cars here that have sold, a full modded with high quality parts + super clean body / interior AE86 typically sells between $8k-$15k, with the relatively large variation being which engine is swapped/built, and the car being coupe or hatch. There have been some really nice ones in that price range.

Clean lightly modded 86's are more in the $4k-$6k range. (GT-S or full proper GT-S swap).
Obviously, there are exceptions, and some cars sell for more/less sometimes, but they don't typically deviate far from those ranges.

The full stock + super clean untouched survivor market is something I still don't know much about, in terms of pricing. Those type of AE86's are so rare you hardly get to see them sell so you can pinpoint the pricing range.

This high price corolla market is a double edged sword. I once got offered 8k for my (Clean) GTS Hatch with a salvage title. I have too much sentimental value on it to ever sell it. But i thought it was hillarious how people go up to me and offer me three times what i paid for it back in 09. Its funny showing people craiglsist posts and price ranges for these cars that dont know anything about them. Most of the time I get the "ITS JUST A FREAKIN COROLLA MAN" and i laugh. I blame the price hike on the Honda boys that jumped on the AE86 train right when it was still cheap. They tore up some clean 86's, and now try to sell them twice their value with half the parts. "I KNOW WHAT I GOT".. if you really believed your car was a gem you wouldnt be selling it. Shitty part though is that spare parts for these cars have gone up as well, and the hoarders dont help the cause. THats the life of a 86er I guess, im jsut glad I got both my GT-S cars for 09 market value. ($2500 a pop) When i tell people how much i paid for em, their eyes seem to fall out of their heads. We're headed in the direction of the 510/240z guys, and the prices dont seem to go down.

Reading all of this just makes me love my car more. It's a labor of love. One that few people enjoy b/c they don't want to do their own work and maintain anything or fix anything. I absolutely adore my AE's and I cringe at how little the car is actually worth if we are being honest. But you just don't on an 86 to make money or even save money lol! You own an 86 b/c when everything is going well it is truly special.
