1991 celica ST track car?

Postby 1991celi » Thu Jan 30, 2014 11:00 am

As the title said, do you guys think that a 20v swapped 5th gen celica ST would make a decent track day car if lowered, strengthened and a rear disc swap? I wanted to buy a celica all-trac but the seller backed out. or should i just spend the money on a newer car like the is300, WRX etc.

OPINIONS WANTED
Here are some pics of the celica as is.

the st18X chassis is pretty heavy for the 20v. it might even be slower than the gt with the 5sfe. i would save the money for something else, maybe look for another all-trac if you really want one. the thing is these cars are old now and getting replacement parts for them is at the point where 1 or 2 years from now might be near impossible. an is300 or wrx would make a good car, you got better aftermarket support and parts are easy to get still.

it takes a person that is very passionate about a certain toyota make to really make it stand out. now im not saying your not, but its the way its always been, it cost money and time to be different. even then the machine you build may cost more and may just come close to or equal to the performance of a newer/popular car. you have to really love it.

if you already have this car and you wanted to track it, i would focus on the brake system. switch the brake system to the later 92-93 gt version (same as the all-trac) after that i would spend money on some decent tires, these will make the biggest difference. lowering springs might bottom out at the track since most are pretty soft (upgrading to a good damper such as koni yellow might be better), coilovers will help, swaybars will help, all these will help with driver confidence. the more confident you are the harder you are willing to push, thus helping you go faster. not just that but stiffer suspension provide better roll resistance, it will mean better wheel alignment and better wheel alignment helps keep the tires flatter using more of the contact patch. however all this talk of how or what things do and what to upgrade is just talk, the best thing to do is just track the car and improve your own driving. there will be a point where the current setup is slower than what you can do with it. at this point you should already know or have an idea of what you should upgrade since it will be the one thing slowing you down or causing you problems. thats not to say that you should band-aid it and not learn/use the proper technique before then. its easy to think of something else being the problem with improper line taking or braking. i know i made upgrading when your skills exceed the current setup seem like a good rule to follow, but whats more important is to not set these rules in stone. upgrade whatever you want when you want, since your tuning/evolving the ride as you like. who knows maybe over time the ride might be so refined it will surprise a lot of people.

Hey man, thanks for the reply. yeah the at180 is kinda heavy around 2500-2800, and i already have the car so i was seeing what my options were. thank you very much for that last paragraph, being a newbie this website has helped TONS. i would not have copmpleted the 20v swap if it wasnt for this site being here. i am passionate about these cars, but not enough to justify spending thousands extra just for replacement parts and just to keep up with cars of today. i think ill keep this as my DD for now and get a nice car for the summer. again thanks for the help
