WTB Clean Hatch, 6k

Postby RottTrainer » Wed Apr 02, 2014 8:52 pm

I'm looking to become a first time AE86 owner. I'm looking for a clean hatch. I will pay up to 6k, possibly more but it will really have to impress me. The sedan just doesn't do it for me so hatchs only please. I'm located in the Midwest and willing to travel.

So youre from Minnesota? As am I and in the market for a hatch... I have found one that im hoping to pick up this weekend granted this sh!t snow disappears. Have you seen the one for sale in Burnsville, MN? guy is asking 4k for it. but it is in fact a coupe not a hatch but an original GTS! rare cars to come by up here in the great state of Minnesota... Good luck in your hunt, I hope mine will be done this weekend.

(BTW what city are you from)?

I saw that one in Burnsville, its original but its rusty for 4k, I wouldn't pay that much for it. It would take thousands in body work not even counting the paint job it needs. I would probably buy it for the right price but I don't want to insult the owner with my offer. I would rather get the gts coupe in Oregon for 3.9k (rust free) or wait for something else to surface up.

I hear ya man. I was thinking 2,000 for that one. Im really in an urgent state to acquire one though. I have a fully built turbo set up 4ag that needs to find a new home inside of a 86... Ive got around $8,000+ into the motor so Im ready to get a shell or anything i can get my hands on at this point... Im from Hastings, if you're not too far from that we should meet up some time.

btw I noticed you'd be a first time 86 owner? Good luck, you'll buy one (sell it like i did >:|) Then youll be in the market for another because they suck to live without. lol

I'm still looking but holy **** you have to pay so much and you don't get a lot for your money, 80s, under powered, econo box. But oddly enough I still want one, just need to find one for a decent deal.

I totally hear ya man. Im still on the hunt for one myself. About to just buy out of state and pay the shipping to get it back home. btw I work for a shipping company so I can probably pull a few favors if you were planning on doing the same thing. Maybe get you a car shipped here for more like four hundred instead of 6-7 hundred. lmk.

Hey RottTrainer,

If you were to pick that car up from Tampa there and were interested in having it shipped back I could get you a pretty good quote on an enclosed trailer, as long as this guy with the car has access to a loading dock and you could pick it up in Eagan, MN direct from my freight company. Let me know.

Thanks,
Sam

So many first-timers always come onto the forums asking for a great deal on a CLEAN 86 with some other specific qualities (mostly stock, working AC, blah blah). Usually, after many months of not finding anything within their liking, they either give up or lower their standards/prerequisites. I'm not saying to give up on looking for a good deal, but it's always good to have a realistic view. These cars are pushing 30, many have been converted into hobby race/drift cars, and then there's the gawd-awful Takumi tax.

For example, I bought my original GTS hatch for $3K, but it needed work. A decent amount of work. I'm glad I went for it because if I hadn't and kept my standards really high, I would probably still be looking for one over a year later. There are clean hatches out there. Just prepare to either potentially wait an extremely long (indefinite amount of) time for that great deal or pay a ridiculous price for them since many of those owners put their heart and soul into their cars to restore/maintain them. I remember a really clean GTS hatch I was interested in before buying mine, but the asking price was over $10K (if memory serves). Thought it would never sell with such a high price. It did.

Anyways, just my $0.02. Good luck, OP!

TL;DR - Want a clean, specific 86? Prepare to wait a long time and/or pay a high price. Want an 86 soon for a decently low price? Prepare to put work into it.

I'm the original owner of my AE86 Hatch..............if I did ever want to sell it, I would ask $12k for mine. WHY?

It's all Stock/OEM AND UNMOLESTED. My .02 cents. Search for my AE86 in the forum.........you'll agree. :o ;)
