Toyota's "Backward" wiring

Postby Red » Mon Feb 25, 2013 7:17 pm

Yes, Toyota is alone in the automotive worls, they wire up the horn and headlights "backwards".

While the rest of the world uses a solid ground connection, and then applies "switched hot" to provide power, Toyota connects positive power ALL THE TIME to the horn and headlights. When you press the horn button, that completes the GROUND side of the circuit. Same thing with the lights, the light switches complete a GROUND to turn on the headlights.

And I've been told that Toyota are the only carmaker in the world who do it that way. Backwards, from everyone else's point of view.

Thank you for the info Red. Much appreciated. I tried tracking down my FSM wiring diagrams....then realized I sucked at reading them.

Toyota's wiring diagrams just violate the way schematics are done in the US, and sometimes they're just needlessly confusing, or outright WRONG. I've got 1157 brake/tail lights, as I think we all do from 84-87. Nope, not according to my EWD. EWD shows one set of wires for the brake lights, another set for the tail lights, it just doesn't show dual-filament bulbs back there.

Think it is too late to demand they take back my car and refund my money? <G>

It may be too late, but I would love to see the look on the salesmans face.

Nah, already saw the look on his face.

When I went to pick up my car (way out of town, they were on allocation and not available locally) he forgot to ask for my check. So I'm standing outside the dealership, keys in hand, check still in pocket, saying to myself just how many state lines would I need to get across...And he comes flying out the showroom doors because his manager took the paperwork and said "Where's the check?".

"Are you looking for this? I was wondering when you were going to ask for it." Oh, was he relieved. I think he knew how many state lines there were, too.<G>
