20V BT Hydraulic tensioner, how to remove?

Hello,

I just rebuild my 4AGE 20V but noticed that my valves are too loose. Already thought so when mounting them, but hoped that they would get tighter during time. But after about 700 miles after the rebuild they're still too loose. So i'm going to adjust the clearances, but to do that i have to remove the timing belt. My biggest question is how to safely remove the hydraulic tensioner? The tensioner is still new (700 miles old ) and so is the timing belt.

How can i safely remove it so that i can use it again. I don't have the pin anymore that came with it unfortunately.

Remove it safely? Its not going to damage anything if you just unbolt it and take it off. Once you have it off toss is in a press or even a bench vise and tighten down until the holes line up. Then just thread a piece of metal through. I lost my pin and just used a tiny cotter pin I straightened out with pliers.

Ow okay, i wasn't sure the pin would go completely out of the body when i'd just unbolt it.

I don't have a press but a bench vise is a good idea. Thanks!

A small allen wrench also works good as a replacement pin

I deleted the auto tensioner on mine by converting it back to a spring style tensioner.
-AE86 16v oil pump
-AE86 16v timing belt tensioner, spring, and pin for holding the spring
-AE101 timing belt (available from any Toyota dealer)

Could have been an option, but i have a new oil pump, new belt, new tensioner, etc.

I did remove it safely today and found something to hold it.

Was this on a blacktop or silvertop?

Black top. Silvertops don't have hydraulic tensioners.

Cool, so i assume converting to the spring style is much more reliable and safe? Or is there really much gain in doing it?

It's somewhat more reason reliable but if you change the tensioner with every belt change you should be fine. They tend to fail when they are getting old.

^^ that could get pricy with a bt tensioner. 16v tensioner is alot cheaper and more readily available. I swapped my bt oil pump for the 16v redtop pump. moot point since i am running a 16/20(16v head, bt bottom)

That's true but a change is needed only every 100.000 km or every 6 year i believe. So that's once in the 6 year about $100? Changing to the 16V oil pump, costs you an oil pump, that's also pretty expensive.

you can always modify your old hydraulic tensioner like below and make it manual ...tap a hole in the bottom and drain tread for a 10mm allen key bolt and use a 10mm nut to lock in place...

Think that's what i gonna do with the next timing belt change...if i still have the car by then :p
