AE86/AW11 4A-GE Oil Pan

Postby El Gato Felix » Sun Jun 22, 2025 8:46 am

Does anyone know if the the 4A-GE Oil Pan in the Mk1 AW11 Mr2 is the same as the AE86 4A-GE Oil pan? Just wondering because I found an Mr2 Gem with a 58,000 mile 4A-GE engine. And I am very excited to swap out this low mileage motor in my AE86. Tried searching but didn't find much information. Thanks!

There's a few versions over the years. Some have the oil return for the oil cooler, others don't. Then there's the update in the latter years where the shape changes slightly. The earlier are rectangular, while the newer have a cut-out on the side.

Seems like you're just talking about swapping the entire motor? If yes, then you'll be fine. There's no FWD & RWD pans.
haha cali...i got one of your 86's and you're not getting it back.

Thank you for your response Morgan^^^ The motor is from a 1985 Toyota Mk1 Mr2 AW11. It's a large port 3 rib 4A-GE NA with blue black lettering on the valve covers. Also TVIS if that means anything. It does have an oil cooling line that runs from the oil filter to a cooler pipe and returns to the oil pan. It looks exactly like the motor in my AE86 only difference is the engine location. And yes I plan on swapping the complete motor. I understand I will have to change a few parts to make it RWD configuration. I was just wondering if the oil pans are different because of the mounting location of the engine is different on both cars.

I did a big port FWD into a RWD. No problem with the oil pan. You will have to change the oil cooler hard line going into the oil pan. Also the cooling fittings. Depending on what accessories used you may have to swap water pumps and pulleys etc. Before dropping in the FWD motor, verify that the motor mount bosses have the threads tape in the block. Not all MR-2 block had the RWD engine mount bosses taped.
