Just an info. post.
For anyone having problems with their distributor and in particular the pick ups inside it maybe worth checking the wiring from the plug. On two of my distributors the common ground wire (white) was breaking away from a crimped joiner that is used to split the ground. You will need to remove any insulation tape to access it. Having a hatred of soldered wires l used a bullet type non-insulated crimp with heat sink to repair.
A smallport distributor splits the ground into three at this crimp.
Hope it helps someone!

Had the same problem with a crimped splitter on a big port wiring harness.

These cars and their wiring looms are now around 40 years old and faults like broken wires are a nightmare to locate. Given we now appear to know that these crimps can cause problems should we post up where they are located in the loom when we find one, broken or not?

Do you have any pictures of the repair?

If I could get my hands on another full AE86 harness I would actually like to figure out how to make reproduction harnesses... the only thing I keep getting stuck on is finding the old Toyota style plugs. If anyone has leads on where to get plugs I'll take them. :)

Gazoo Racing are making replacement looms and it seems that Toyota themselves are having issues with some of the plugs. The instructions state to re-use a couple of the connectors on the new loom.

Wow thanks for that link! I wonder what the chances are of them making a USDM harness... the JDM one isn't compatible with our cars.

Have you tried with Dr Occa, for the plugs.
I just got a distributor from him, and supplied me with the OEM plugs
cheers

I'm not sure who that is... do you have a username or email for them?
