Please identify this 4a-ge for me.

Hi guys,

So I'm suspecting my 4age bigport 7-rib in my AW11 MR2 might has developed a rod knock. Not sure yet, but just in case I started looking for backup engines and found this baby on a junkyard, its 100 or so miles away from me so I got the junkyard owner to send me some pictures, they're not the best:

So far I can tell this thing doesn't have EGR (note the intake), it's a t-vis engine and it seems to be using a MAP, which seems to be missing. This thing is sitting in a Celica right now. I can get the whole thing wiith everything except transmission for $ 150. It has been sitting around for 5 years tho, so it's probably not perfect. Any ideas if this is a 7 rib or a 3 rib block? I would like a non-egr MAP engine actually, I really hate the AFM, Is it possible to swap this into my AW11 without too much hassle?

The coolant pipe on the distributor makes me think it's an FX engine. I don't know about the EGR, MAP or AFM differences, though.

Being in a FWD Celica I'd say it is an AT160...

In which cae it is the early 3-rib 4AGE. I've only seen them in RHD but I'd guess
there were probably some LHD versions sent to Europe. Looks like it still has the
chassis plate, so you could get confirmation on the chassis code.

Thank you jondee. You are spot on as always.

It's in an at160. I kinda figured its a 3-rib too. I actually like the fact its a 3 rib with the map and no EGR. Question is how tricky will it be to get it to work in my AW11. I plan to use my head which is brand new with catcams and adjustable pulleys in it, but I plan to use everything else of this engine. Gonna be a lot of wiring involved?

engine is an engine.... you have a largeport, this is a largeport. All your electrics should work........

As said, mechanically the engines are identical, and any bolt-on parts that you
need to swap over will work. On the electrical side, if you plan to run the engine
as MAP sensored, you need to get the MAP sensor, ECU and engine wiring loom.

There are bound to be some small differences in the pinouts, and maybe even
in the ECU plugs. Providing you have the AT160 ECU and loom, you will have all
you need to adapt the AW11 wiring to suit the AT160 components.

We never had 4A-GE powered Celicas in the US. I guess the OP is in Europe? I was thinking someone swapped a 4A-GE into a Celica (if this was in the US). Which wouldn't make sense since someone would be better off with a 3S-GE (stock vs stock).

Yeah... it was a bit of an oddball model... kind of a transition between the last
of the RWD Celicas and the first of the ST-Series Celicas. There were a few sold
here new and a few more that came in as used imports back in the 80's. You didn't
miss anything by not getting them in the US :)
