Stock 4age build advice needed

Postby Cortina69 » Sun Sep 25, 2016 1:20 pm

Recently I've been thinking of turbo'in my 4age over the winter. At this stage I'm only looking at small amounts of boost just to give me alittle more over standard bhp.

Advice needed as to what is needed to start this:

Current build..
4age large port
20v silvertop itbs
Small port injectors
Aftermarket ecu.

Is it as easy as putting a turbo, inter cooler and inlet plenum (over the current itbs) and mapping? I've read lots of posts and pages, but want to post a direct question.

Any help would be fantastic

"Easy" is relative. But it sounds like you have the basic idea. Just take your time and don't blow it up.

If you still have (or can get hold of one cheap) the factory RWD single throttle
intake manifold, you may find that is simplifies your setup.

I was thinking of using a gtir pulsar plenum top over the itbs.

Also looking at the cast top mount manifold, any thoughts with these set-ups?

Many Thanks

Like the SQ Engineering conversion ?

Definitely going to hold any amount of boost you want to run :) Just need to make
sure you have enough clearance at the firewall end.

why complicate things with ITBs.... for so little benefit at lo output(if any) ? Get a stock gts rwd intake as suggested
Tooooo many simple turbo builds documented, u can draw from
CXracing (revised) cast manifold + used ca18 or sr20 T25 bolts on and is all u need
gearbox could survive behind that too
I'd chase a 'loaded' megasquirt from a diyautotune 4AG guy
gze, ca18 or 7M supra 440cc injectors

this advanced(& very nice) 4agte build, says ITBs were a pita http://www.aeu86.org/forum/showthread.php?tid=14830

read my build thread for specifics. But the bare bones basic you need

Turbo [$100-$1,200]
Turbo manifold DONT USE CXRACING/Ebay ones they break and fit like **** [$400+]
Custom Exhaust [I spent close to $400 for mandrel bent 3" turbo back]
Remove ur ITBs and run RWD manifold [Could be had for like 100 bucks]
Intercooler Piping and IC [~$250ish]
440cc injectors minimum even at low boost. (gze or 7m)[$100]
Standalone [$800+]
Tune[~$400]
WIdeband [~250]
Bare bones total: $2750+ that doesnt include if you want to run a BOV, all your turbo oil and coolant lines, oil cooler[stock cooler cant cool the turbo oil quick enough], any monitoring gauges[boost, temps, pressures], upgraded internals, MAP and IAT sensors for the standalone to work properly, upgraded radiator... etc etc. Be prepared to spend close to 4grand for a legitimate turbo setup. EVEN if you "only want like 5 lbs dude" becuase boost isnt really the biggest factor here, its prepping your engine to take in the extra heat generated, and to get it to be drivable.

3rib bottom end held 7lbs on my car safely[with a tune] for 2 years
Dont try to cheap out, because cheaping out = cheap results.

Unless youre those guys like "Instead of a standalone can i just run stock ecu and make it work, i just want like low boost bro dude hellaflush" Then you can do anything you like, but when it doesnt run right, or you blow it up dont be making useless "OMG WHY MY ENGINE BLEW UP" threads

Turbo manifold DONT USE CXRACING/Ebay ones they break and fit like **** [$400+]

I'm referring to the CAST $99 cx manifold. It was actually detailed on the old club4ag forum, how a 4agte user got CX to modify the flange angle so the t25 fit good

Gotta remember MANY 4agte builds did NOT use a stanalone. Worked fine for the modest power level/car use.... resulted in some fast cars
Those that blew up admitted they turned the boost up beyond capability, etc... Blame the user, not the hardware
Lotsa "hacks" got the job done admirably.... AFM adj, FMU, RRfpr, SAFC, MSD-BTM, etc.
Just as with any standalone, the key is to understand what u r doing

I posted a detailed turbo magazine article of a bone stock toyota 1.5L paseo that was turbocharged at 96,000 miles
Article written ~20,000 miles later. Ran a bell rrfpr, msd-btm, t25/t28, upgraded pump + bigger fuel lines with STOCK injectors
Full weight airconditioned daily driver ran 12.5 sec quarters. Built by a pro (John Meyers)

i used to run the CX cast manifold v.1 and v.2 its the biggest piece of **** ive ever spent 80 bucks on. Both time (even the revised version) didnt clear the booster and/or the distributor.

Running a SAFC and FMU with MSD ignition is WAY different than running on a stock ECU "For low boost" SAFC is FUEL MANAGEMENT which tricks the ecu, and compensates more fuel. The people who upgrade their fuel and spark and run some sort of management arent who im referring to. The ones im referring to are the ones that thinking that they can slap a turbo on the car, run 7lbs, and see that it runs "fine" for a few months. Then out of nowhere they blow it up.

I ran 10lbs on a 260k mile smallport 3rib engine no problems, but i had management. Boost doesnt blow up engines.. knock and detonation do.

i can recall the thread about the CX cast manifold ending up with "good" turbo placement. From pix he posted, cleared the valve cover, dist & master cyl fine. That was the whole point of the back & forth excercise. Could depend on which T2x and how its clocked.... maybe ? ....or CX 'unloading' other prototypes ?

I'd hope nobody thinks stock 4age ecu is adequate for boost by itself
Stock ecu + various supplements has taken slow boring 4AGes to boosted excitement, on a budget. Lots of examples detailed
